A method determines a total velocity average cross-section parameter&#x3c3;&#x3bd;in a relationship of the form &#x393;(U)=n&#x3c3;&#x3bd;&#xb7;&#x192;(U, U), where: &#x393;(U) is a rate of exponential loss of sensor atoms from a cold atom sensor trap of trap depth potential energy U in a vacuum environment due to collisions with residual particles in the vacuum environment; nis a number density of residual particles in the vacuum environment; Uis a parameter given by which relates the masses of the sensor atoms mand residual particles mto the total velocity average cross-section parameter&#x3c3;&#x3bd;; and &#x192;(U, U) is a function of the trap depth potential energy U and the parameter Uwhich models a naturally occurring dependence of the loss rate &#x393;(U) on the trap depth potential energy U and the parameter U, where &#x192;(U=0, U) is unity for all U.

Quantum pressure standard and methods for determining and using same

A method and apparatus for determining the compressive strength of masonry units based on airborne sonic signals generated by stimulating the samples with short duration, mechanical impulses are described. The non-destructive testing apparatus consists of a specimen support unit which mechanically isolates the masonry unit from the environment and from the support, a mechanical stimulator, and an acoustic response detector. The signals recorded are analyzed to extract the pertinent features which are then used to compute the compressive strength of the sample. The pertinent signals are deduced through a calibration of the masonry type being analyzed (material and shape) based on physical analysis of the sample's normal modes of vibration, or through Finite Element Analysis of the vibrations, or through direct empirical calibration. This non-destructive testing method is low-cost, readily implemented and provides a reliable technique for compressive strength estimation.

Method and apparatus for non-destructive measurement of modulus of elasticity and/or the compressive strength of masonry samples

An apparatus and method that can measure flux density in-situ under high vacuum conditions includes a means for confining a collection of identical, elemental sensor particles to a volume of space by initial cooling by laser or another method, then confinement in a sensor volume using externally applied magnetic and/or optical fields.
