Circuitry including a first and second source of electrical energy provides a continuous supply of electrical energy to a volatile memory circuit utilized within an electrical apparatus. The circuitry includes an on and off switch and allows for the first source of electrical energy to be supplied to the volatile memory when the switch is both in an on and off position. The secondary source of electrical energy is only used to supply electrical energy to the volatile memory when the first souce of electrical energy is either inoperative or disconnected from the circuit. Such circuitry allows for conservation of power of the second source of electrical energy which in some electronic apparatus may include a lithium battery that may be relatively difficult to replace.

A hand-held labeler, particularly a labeler employing a thermographic print head, utilizes improved control circuitry for accurately sensing the position of the web and controlling the operation of the print head in order accurately to control the position of the imprints on the web. When a motor is used to advance the web, the control system is operative to control the operation and speed of the web advancing motor.

A web positioning system, particularly usable for use in a hand-held labeler employing a thermographic print head, utilizes a circular indexing member having a plurality of position defining indices for providing indications representative of the position of the web. The circular, and relative rotation between the circular member and the shaft is prevented by a plurality of key slots or the like disposed on said circular member and engaging a key, and slot or the like on the shaft. The angular spacing between the key slots is unequal and is substantially greater than the spacing between the position-defining indices; but the position of the position defining indices relative to the shaft may be adjusted by a distance less than the distance between the position defining indices by bringing a different one of the key slots into engagement with the shaft.

A bar code reader employs a microprocessor for decoding data contained in a bar code record and a logarithmic converter ahead of the microprocessor for providing to the microprocessor signals indicative of the logarithms of the widths of the scanned bars and spaces. The base of the logarithms used by the logarithmic converter is selected in a predetermined manner to maximize the resolution of the system for the particular microprocessor used, and to reduce the complexity of the system.

Record decoding system and method utilizing logarithmic techniques

A data collecting and transmitting system includes a dynamic MOS circulating memory in a portable hand-held unit. The memory is divided into N discrete time slots in a repetitive time frame for storing N data entries supplied by a keyboard input or a peripheral input unit. A load point counter operating in the same time frame is slipped a time slot on each entry to provide a variable marker representing the next empty time slot for receiving an entry. The memory contents can be supplied to a visual display in the hand unit or to an external transmitter into which the hand unit can be plugged. An output point counter operating in the same time frame is slipped a time slot as each stored data entry is read out to provide a variable marker representing the next data entry to be withdrawn from storage. The system also includes a message counter whose contents are transferrable to the visual display to indicate the number of entries, and this system also includes a clock rate control for changing the time frame between a slow rate for circulation of data and a fast rate for input and output operations. The hand unit is normally powered by batteries but operates on a line power source when plugged into the transmitter to permit the hand unit batteries to be charged during the transmission period.
