A system and method for provisioning cable telephone service in a cable communication system that is at least partially integrated with a telephone network. The cable communication system includes a head end Remote Digital Terminal (RDT) respectively communicating with a broadband network, a telephone switch and a customer premises Integrated Service Unit (ISU), and also includes an Order Management Center (OMC) associated with the RDT, the switch, or both. To implement telephone service to customer premises equipment adapted for communication with the ISU, the RDT is notified of a new service request by way of a service request message sent from the ISU to the RDT, and the switch is notified of the new service request by way of provisioning information sent from the OMC to the switch via an Element Management System (EMS) associated with the switch. Advantageously, the RDT and the switch are adapted exchange information needed to coordinate the provisioning of telephone service to the customer premises equipment. In a first embodiment, which is useful when the OMC and the switch are not owned by the same service provider, the service option information sent to the switch is initially provided to the OMC via an in-service telephone. In a second embodiment, which is useful when the OMC and the switch are co-owned, the service option information is initially provided to the OMC via a temporary telephone connection established between the customer premises equipment and the OMC.

Provisioning of cable telephone service

An arrangement for permitting callers to make speed dialing calls away from their home telephone. A speed dialing list is maintained for those who subscribe to this service for a particular telephone line. When the caller who normally uses that line and makes use of his/her speed dialing feature from that line, and is away from his/her telephone, speed dialing service can be obtained if the call is a calling card, or credit/debit card telephone call. Such calls are routed initially to a switch for serving such calls. This switch then queries a calling card or credit card data base to obtain either a number corresponding to the caller's speed calling number, or to obtain an identification of the switch which contains that caller's speed dialing list. The caller is identified by his/her calling card, or credit/debit card number. If the data base provides a number, or other data for directly deriving the destination number corresponding to a speed dialed number, then the calling card server switch can complete the call to that number. Otherwise, the calling card server switch queries the caller's home switch to obtain the required speed dialing information, and then completes the call. Advantageously, this arrangement allows callers who may have forgotten the directory number corresponding to a speed calling number, to use their speed calling feature along with credit card calls even when they are away from their home telephone. Additionally, this type of arrangement can be used to allow callers to call their home telephone by providing their calling card number plus an indication, such as &num; or *; the calling card number is used to access a data base to provide the telephone number of the home telephone of the calling card holder.

Speed calling when away from home

Customers that have groups of stations served from multiple digital switching systems, which frequently include mixtures of PBXs and Centrex, require capabilities that will allow those station groups to operate as one global group. This invention permits customer station groups, including PBXs and Centrexes interconnected by private facilities or by the public switched telephone network (including long distance carriers), to act as a single entity that supports integrated voice and data communications. Advantageously, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Primary Rate Interface (PRI) facilities are used to carry the communications and signaling to and from the PBXs.

Private branch exchange networks

This invention relates to arrangements for simplifying the transfer of a source of telecommunications signals, such as a telecommunications customer line or telecommunications trunk, from a first port of a switching system to a second port of that same switching system. Such a transfer requires a transfer of a connection in the outside plant, usually in a manhole, and establishment of a connection from the outside plant to the second port, usually in a distributing frame of the switching system. Translation data is stored for the second port to indicate availability of the second port for assignment to a customer, and, in one embodiment of the invention, to identify the customer to be connected to that second port. In accordance with that embodiment of the invention, the customer line to the first port is tested in the manhole to verify the identity of that customer; the line to the second port is tested to see if the translation data for that second port comprises the same customer identification. If so, a request to assign the translation data for that customer to the second port is then transmitted from the manhole. In response to an acknowledgment that the translation data has been so assigned, the customer's line is transferred to the second port. Advantageously, the translation data can be stored and a connection to the second port can be established ahead of time in the switching system, and the transfer of the line can be carried out by one individual in the manhole without requiring the cooperation of other craft in the switching system.

Telecommunications service provision equipment transfer

A line-based 911 system and method that completes an emergency call from a telephone to a PSAP comprising a multiplicity of operator stations connected by individual lines to a telephone switching system. An emergency call is routed to the termination ports of the switching system associated with a PSAP. Each of the termination ports is connected to one of the multiplicity of operator stations via its associated line, thereby establishing a path from the telephone to the operator station, the CPN of the calling telephone is delivered to the selected operator station and the operator station obtains location information of the telephone in accordance with the CPN, which is then displayed.

Line-based public safety answering point

The present invention addresses an improved solution to the problem of cutover verification testing where a new digital switching system is to replace an existing switching system that serves at least a group of subscribers via continuous wire lines. It permits a plurality of existing wire lines to be concurrently connected to channel units associated with the new switching system without adversely impacting the existing service and automatic testing under the control of the new system.
