An all solid state rechargeable oxide-ion (ROB) battery () has a thermal energy storage (TES) unit () between two oxide-ion cells () with metal-metal oxide electrodes () on opposite sides of an anion conducting solid electrolyte () where none of the electrodes is contact with air.

The outer surface of a metal electrodeof a rechargeable oxide-ion battery (ROB) cell is covered by its own dense electrolyteand interconnection, where the dense electrolyteand interconnectionhermetically seal the metal electrode away from oxygen-containing environment to prevent direct contact between active metal and oxygen which would lead to self discharge, thus, producing a self-sealed metal electrode of a ROB cell without introducing additional sealing components.
