A golf club face position detection system incorporates a light beam reflected off the face of a golf club as the face strikes the ball which activates a circuit to capture the image of the reflected light beam against a target area thereby indicating horizontal and vertical angulation of the face at or near the time of ball contact.

A golf club shaft is provided with increased torsional stiffness by making the outside diameter of the tip end larger. The torsional stiffness per unit weight of the shaft is greater than the torsional stiffness per unit weight of prior shafts. The shaft can be attached to a clubhead by inserting the tip end over a male hosel or over a shaft adapter which is attached to a female hosel.

A wood type golf clubhead includes a face, a sole, a crown, a toe portion, a heel portion, and a hosel portion adjacent the heel portion. The hosel portion has an inverted or recessed portion which includes a generally concave wall. A hosel tube extends upwardly from the hosel portion. The hosel tube is supported within a boss which is formed integrally with the inside surface of the face. An alignment groove is provided at the intersection between the face and the crown, and the groove includes a surface which lies within a plane which is substantially vertical when the clubhead is soled at address. The sole includes a flat portion for supporting the clubhead at address, and a rear wall curves upwardly and rearwardly from the flat portion to the crown. The toe portion and the crown merge at a relatively sharp angle to provide a streamlined shape.

A golf clubhead includes a front face, a top crown, and a plurality of rails which extend rearwardly from the face and downwardly from the crown. The open structure provided by the rails permit weight to be distributed high in the toe portion and low in the heel portion of the clubhead.

A golf bag is equipped with a stand for supporting the bag in a generally upright position. The stand includes a pair of support legs which are pivotally attached to the top of the bag. The golf bag is carried by a bag strap, and a leg strap is attached to one of the support legs and is attached to the bag strap for pivoting the support legs to a closed position when the bag strap is lifted and for allowing the support legs to pivot to an open position when the bag strap is relaxed.

A golf putter includes a clubhead and a shaft. The clubhead is symmetrical about a first plane which extends through the center of the clubhead perpendicularly to the face of the clubhead. The centerline of the shaft passes through the intersection between the first plane and a second plane which is perpendicular to the first plane and which extends through the point on the face which is intended to contact a golf ball.

A golf bag top and club separator is provided with slots for retaining the heads of golf clubs. Each slot has a flat bottom surface, a first flat side surface which extends perpendicularly upwardly from the bottom surface, a second inclined flat side surface which forms an obtuse included angle with the bottom surface, and a shaft opening which extends through the bottom surface and the inclined side surface.
