A limited use medical probe is disclosed, including a memory for maintaining a use value. The medical probe is coupled to a medical device that inhibits its function when the use value reaches a predetermined threshold value, preventing improper use of the probe. The probe memory may also store identification, usage, and clinical data. A probe auto-identification function, a probe re-identification function and a probe functional test sequence are disclosed for the medical probe. After use, a reprocessing step may reset the probe memory, permitting further probe use.

The invention relates to a medical parameter monitoring device which allows the monitoring of a plurality of medical parameters from a remote location. The invention uses a central monitoring system which transmits and receives date parameters via RF from remote patient monitors. The monitoring system utilized a digital spread spectrum RF transceiver between the central monitoring system to the remote monitors. Forward error correcting, frequency hopping, and spread sprectrum communications are employed to provide accurate transmission of data for a plurality of physiological parameters. Transmitted data can be automatically registered into storage in the central monitoring system.

The device includes a sensor unit which can be attached to a patient and an oximeter which determines the oxygen saturation in the blood based on signals received from the sensor. The sensor can include light emitting devices in three or more wavelengths to provide additional functions. In the present invention, the detected signal is immediately converted to a digital value.

Direct to digital oximeter and method for calculating oxygenation levels

An improved pulse oximeter is disclosed. The pulse oximeter includes audio signal generation means, controlled by algorithms in a processing element which continuously transform the signals from the sensor into signal quality information. This information is converted into an audio signal and annunciated for the operator's use in guiding sensor placement. This signal quality information is available even in the absence of successful computation of pulse rate and/or oxygen saturation level. It furthermore can reflect signal quality changes that may be too subtle to be reflected in the typical numerical representation of pulse rate and oxygen saturation trend. The audio representation of the signal quality can further be modulated to convey other system and/or physiological status and alerts.

An integrated medical monitoring and alert system for monitoring a medical therapy delivered to a patient and patient physiological parameters is disclosed. The medical monitoring system preferably includes a central monitoring system and one or more of a therapeutic device, a patient monitor, and an integrated alert system.
