A method of removing SO.sub.2 from a gas stream containing the same by absorbing the SO.sub.2 in an aqueous solution containing a 4-(2-hydroxyalkyl)-2-piperazinone compound or an alkyl or aryl substituted derivative thereof. These compounds provide an absorbent solution which is less subject to loss during the regeneration step and yet effectively remove the SO.sub.2 from the gas stream without interference from other associated gases.

New compositions of matter are disclosed which are the products resulting from reacting an alkyl substituted aromatic heterocyclic nitrogen-containing compound such as 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine or 2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine with a dicarboxylic acid monoanhydride such as 2-dodecen-1-yl succinic anhydride. These compositions are useful in preventing corrosion of metallic articles in corrosive environments. They are particularly useful in down hole oil and gas well applications.

Polyamide solutions for imparting wet strength to paper are stabilized by acidifying uncrosslinked polyamide solutions prior to storage or prior to crosslinking with epichlorohydrin to form polyamide resins. The acidification of the uncrosslinked solutions allows for storage without refrigeration. The acidification prior to crosslinking results in wet strength resins that are stable at solids concentrations of at least 30% and that exhibit high strength when the resins are post cooked to a viscosity of between about 325 and 425 cps.

The reaction between a hydroxyl-containing material and an isocyanate-containing material is catalyzed by a pyrazino pyrazine compound such as 1,4,5,8-tetramethyldecahydropyrazino(2,3-b)pyrazine.

Aziridinyl-terminated polymers containing the recurring unit ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl and R.sub.2 is hydrogen or a side chain of like structure, are prepared by warming N-(2-hydroxyethyl)- or N-(2-hydroxypropyl)ethylenimine or -propyleneimine. Generally, the reaction is conducted in the presence of an alkali metal and at least trace amounts of water. The polymers are useful as curing agents for epoxy resins.

A method for the preparation of aqueous solutions of anionic polyelectrolytes by combining a stream of a high solid content alkenoic acid-alkyl acrylate latex with a stream of aqueous alkali metal hydroxide, mixing the combined streams under low shear conditions and heating the mixture to produce a polyelectrolyte solution. The use of these steps avoids the formation of high viscosity mixtures or rubber masses which are difficult, if not impossible, to further process into the desired polyelectrolyte solution.
