Material is first formed into a flat ring. Ball retaining pockets are then formed in the flat ring leaving bridge material between adjacent pockets. Bearing balls are inserted into the ball retaining pockets and bridge material between adjacent pockets is then reshaped such that the bridge material wraps partially around the balls, thereby retaining the balls and forming a rigid bridge between adjacent ball pockets. The bridge is proximate a line common to the centers of adjacent balls.

Method of making retainers for ball bearings

A locking collar concentric with an inner ring and outer ring of a bearing assembly is advanced axially by threads or other mechanism on an axial extension of the inner ring. A wedge ring provides a wedge between the axial extension and a rotatable shaft upon advancement of the locking collar and grips the shaft. Preferably, conical washers between the axial extension and the locking collar are abutted by the wedge ring to provide further gripping of the shaft upon advancement of the locking collar. The wedge ring may be used alone or in combination with the conical washers to lock the bearing assembly to the shaft.

Bearing assembly with locking device

A locking collar concentric with an inner ring and outer ring of a bearing assembly is advanced axially by threads or other mechanism on an axial extension of the inner ring. Conical washers between the axial extension and the locking collar are abutted by an abutment surface. Flattening of the conical washers upon advancement of the locking collar grips the shaft. The conical washers may be sued alone or in combination with a wedge ring to lock the bearing assembly to the shaft.

A bearing has an inner ring coaxial to and rotatable relative to an outer ring. A central bore of the inner ring accommodates a multi-sided shaft in at least two positions that are angularly offset relative to each other. Each position provides a different fit between the inner ring and the shaft. A preferred embodiment has a 12-pointed star-shaped bore defined by the superposition of two hexagons of slightly different scale, to accommodate a hexagonal shaft in either of two positions. The second position provides a tighter fit between the bearing and the shaft without requiring tighter manufacturing tolerances.

Bearing for mounting on a multi-sided shaft

The hydrodynamic bearing assembly may be either a journal bearing or a thrust bearing. Bearing pads are located adjacent a shaft when a journal bearing or adjacent a collar on a shaft when a thrust bearing. The bearing pads are located on equalizing pads, two bearing pads for each equalizing pad. An elastomeric layer is disposed between the bearing pads and the equalizing pads.

Equalizing hydrodynamic bearing

The spindle has a sleeve about a fixed shaft. Swing-type bearing pads are attached to the fixed shaft. The bearing pads are lubricated by flowing a lubricant through primary and secondary lubricating holes located in the fixed shaft.

Hydrostatic spindle

A manually controlled ball is rotatable in any direction at variable speeds to operate a pair of perpendicular rotatable shafts. Each shaft is rotated at a speed of and direction dependent upon the direction and speed of rotation of the manually operated ball. An encoder disk is mounted on each shaft. The direction and speed of the disk rotation is translated into electrical signals.

A universal quench press is used for the precision quenching of gears, bearing rings, saw blades, slitting knives, cylindrical parts, flat parts, dished parts, and other articles. A set of quenching dies reduce or eliminate the distortions in size, roundness, taper, and flatness encountered in manufacturing processes prior to the press quenching process and/or operation. The press has a plurality of posts or tie-rods configured to distribute the forces of the applied loads uniformly. Provisions are made for a plurality of generally concentric rams with all of the rams powered by hydraulic or pnuematic cylinders or other force exerting device or devices to provide a uniform and evenly distributed force. An automatic quench media splash guard seals the quenching chamber during operation and requires absolutely no set-up or operating adjustments or changes. Two or more automatic doors provide complete access to the die area during set-up and/or allow two or more points for loading and/or unloading of workpieces and/or tooling. For ultimate accuracy, the lower die plate is stationary and provides a means of guiding the center ram, thus assuring concentricity. Graduated shims are added or removed from the center ram stop to decrease or increase the final part bore diameter as required.
