A laser beam delivery system that uses total internal reflection inside prisms to redirect the high powered broadband output laser power from a laser beam source to the intended target. An articulated arm having straight segments connected end to end by rotatable joints attaches to a laser source that produces a laser output beam having at least two wavelengths. A prism is located at each joint wherein the laser output beam travelling down each of the segments is re-directed down the subsequent segment. The prisms are oriented to re-direct the laser beam by total internal reflection. Anti-reflective coatings are formed on each prism surface where the beam enters and exits each of the prisms.

Delivery system for high power multi-wavelength laser systems

A pulsed solid state laser system is disclosed which utilizes a plurality of individual laser rods which are sequentially pumped and whose beans are combined into a single interleaved output bean. The individual laser rods are pumped at an average power level which is below that for maximum output power from each rod, thereby obviating the need for refrigeration cooling. A compact optical system is disclosed which permits a constant beam size even at different pump levels and other advantages. A compact cooling system is also disclosed.

Apparatus for combining laser beams

A gain medium assembly for a laser system that has or attaches to a cooling fluid source. The gain medium assembly includes a laser system gain medium, an insulating jacket disposed around the gain medium, a cooling jacket disposed around the insulating jacket, and an energy source for optically exciting and heating the gain medium. The cooling jacket defines a cooling channel between itself and the insulating jacket for guiding flowing cooling fluid from the cooling fluid source over the insulating jacket. During operation, the heat in the gain medium dissipates through the insulating jacket and to the cooling fluid in the cooling channel, while the gain medium is maintained at a temperature that is significantly higher than the temperature of the cooling fluid. A gap may be formed between the gain medium and the insulating jacket to allow some of the cooling water to fill the gap and form a thin layer of water, and to provide uniform heat conduction, between the gain medium and the insulating jacket.

A liquid circulation system for cooling a laser head is disclosed. The circulation system comprises a main storage tank for holding a cooling liquid and a pump for circulating the liquid from the tank through the laser head and back into the tank. The cooling system includes a heat exchanger for cooling the liquid. The heat exchanger includes liquid carrying coils and an impeller fan rotatable about an axis. The fan being located adjacent the coils for drawing air across the coils in an axial direction with respect to the fan and for expelling the air radially with respect to the fan.

A CO.sub.2 slab waveguide laser (10) is disclosed including a pair of spaced apart electrodes (36,38) having opposed light reflecting surfaces. The electrodes are dimensioned in a manner to guide light in a plane perpendicular to the reflecting surfaces. Light parallel to the reflecting surfaces is not constrained other than by the resonator mirrors (30,32). The resonator structure includes a negative branch unstable resonator in the nonwaveguide dimension. A stable resonator is used in the waveguide dimension but the mirror spacing from the end of the guide is based in part on the configuration of the unstable resonator. A unique support structure is disclosed for maintaining the electrodes in a spaced apart orientation without confining the discharge. Further refinements are disclosed for cooling the laser and for accommodating thermal expansion of the parts. An improved adjustable mirror assembly (26, 28) is provided which allows the tilt angle of the mirror to be varied from outside of the housing. The subject laser is capable of generating high energy short duration pulses which can be used to treat tissue with reduced trauma.

Resonator for CO.sub.2 slab waveguide laser

A beam delivery apparatus, including a set of focusing mirrors (or transmissive lenses) mounted along an endoscope channel. A laser beam can be focused into an input end of the channel with a smaller F number (wider cone angle) than is possible in a conventional endoscope. As the beam propagates down the channel, it is reflected (or transmitted) a finite number of times by the focusing elements. The focusing elements act as a periscope to focus and refocus the beam as it propagates along the channel, with little loss of beam power. The invention enables delivery of the beam to the channel's distal end with a smaller F number than can be achieved using a conventional endoscope. In a preferred embodiment, a pair of reflecting strips are mounted the channel, the surface of each strip defines six focusing mirrors, and the beam undergoes a total of twelve reflections from the mirrors as it propagates down the channel. Preferably, the surface of each mirror has a curvature selected to prevent the introduction of astigmatic distortion during each beam reflection.

Apparatus for delivering a laser beam

A method and apparatus for minimizing damage to an optical fiber used as part of a laser radiation delivery system are disclosed. The apparatus includes the use of a spacer positioned adjacent the tip of the fiber to minimize the impact on the fiber tip of debris and vapor generated by exposure of a tissue target to high energy radiation. The end of the apparatus is configured to vent debris and vapor from the end of the tip to reduce damage. The fiber tip may also be annealed to enhance its resistance to damage. The buffer material may also be stripped from the delivery end of the fiber so that the inner diameter of the outer support can be narrowed. An epoxy resin is injected into the space between the uncoated fiber and the support to stabilize the fiber and prevent it from bending. The delivery end of the fiber can also be enlarged to shield the remainder of the fiber from debris and vapor.

RF Excited CO.sub.2 slab waveguide laser

A laser system employing one or more mirror sets having substantially astigmatism-free focusing power sufficient to maintain a desired laser beam diameter, for example, to compensate for thermally-induced distributed lensing. In one class of preferred embodiments, the invention is a high power gas laser system having a folded optical cavity with a periodic intracavity refocusing means to compensate for distributed negative thermal lensing in the hot plasma that comprises the active medium, and thus maintain a substantially constant beam diameter throughout the optical cavity. The periodic intracavity refocusing means preferably includes a corner mirror set (including at least one curved mirror and at least one other mirror) at each corner of the folded optical cavity. In one preferred embodiment, each corner mirror set is a mirror pair including a spherical mirror and cylindrical mirror. In another preferred embodiment, each corner mirror set comprises three mirrors (including three spherical mirrors, or two spherical mirrors and a planar mirror). In another class of preferred embodiments, the inventive focusing mirror sets are not included within the optical cavity of a high power laser, but instead, one or more such focusing mirror sets are included within the output beam delivery optical components of a high power laser. For example, one of the inventive focusing mirror sets may replace a conventional lens to direct the output beam of a high power laser system along a desired path and maintain a desired beam diameter.

High power laser with focusing mirror sets

A servo alignment method and apparatus for maintaining laser beam alignment. An operating parameter of the laser (such as output beam power) is measured, and error signals are generated from the measured operating parameter signal for controlling the laser beam alignment. In one class of embodiments, modulation signals are supplied to an intra-cavity component of a laser system to modulate the beam path. The beam path may be modulated by reciprocating a laser resonator mirror about a mirror axis or two substantially orthogonal mirror axes. In the latter case, the mirror may be vibrated about the axes either alternately (first about one axis and then about the other) or simultaneously. In embodiments in which an intra-cavity component is modulated, the laser operating parameter is measured during such modulation, the measured operating parameter signal is demodulated (preferably by multiplication in a mixer with a selected frequency component of the modulation signal currently being asserted, and error signals are generated from the demodulated signal for controlling the laser beam alignment.

Laser alignment servo method and apparatus

A laser system employing one or more mirror sets having substantially astigmatism-free focusing power sufficient to maintain a desired laser beam diameter, for example, to compensate for thermally-induced distributed lensing. In one class of preferred embodiments, the invention is a high power gas laser system having a folded optical cavity with a periodic intracavity refocusing means to compensate for distributed negative thermal lensing in the hot plasma that comprises the active medium, and thus maintain a substantially constant beam diameter throughout the optical cavity. The periodic intracavity refocusing means preferably includes a corner mirror set (including at least one curved mirror and at least one other mirror) at each corner of the folded optical cavity. In one preferred embodiment, each corner mirror set is a mirror pair including a spherical mirror and cylindrical mirror. In another class of preferred embodiments, the inventive focusing mirror sets are not included within the optical cavity of a high power laser, but instead, one or more such focusing mirror sets are included within the output beam delivery optical components of a high-power laser. For example, one of the inventive focusing mirror sets may replace a conventional lens to direct the output beam of a high power laser system along a desired path and maintain a desired beam diameter.

A rod laser having a ring cavity configuration, and including a polarization rotator to compensate for birefringence of the laser's rod. Preferably, the rotator is a 90.degree. crystal quartz rotator. In a preferred embodiment, the ring laser is a stable quasi-unidirectional, non-confocal solid state ring laser. A telescope, including at least two lenses with variable inter-lens spacing, is preferably positioned in the laser beam path as closely as possible to the laser rod. The spacing between the telescope lenses is preferably controlled by a servo mechanism. In a preferred embodiment, a power density detector is provided for producing a beam power signal, and a means (which may include a microprocessor) coupled to the power density detector generates a servo mechanism feedback control signal from the beam power signal. Since the system of the invention maintains a high quality output beam having low far-field beam divergence and small laser beam focal spot diameter, over a wide and varying range of output beam power, the output beam is particularly useful for such applications as high speed drilling, welding, and cutting.

Ring laser with improved beam quality

A servo alignment method and apparatus for maintaining laser beam alignment. An operating parameter of the laser (such as output beam power) is measured, and error signals are generated from the measured operating parameter signal for controlling the laser beam alignment. In one class of embodiments, modulation signals are supplied to an intra-cavity component of a laser system to modulated the beam path. The beam path may be modulated by reciprocating a laser resonator mirror about a mirror axis or two substantially orthogonal mirror axes. In the latter case, the mirror may be vibrated about the axes either alternately (first about one axis and then about the other) or simultaneously. In embodiments in which an intra-cavity component is modulated, the laser operating parameter is measured during such modulation, the measured operating parameter signal is demodulated (preferably by multiplication in a mixer with a selected frequency component of the modulation signal currently being asserted), and error signals are generated from the demodulated signal for controlling the laser beam alignment.
