A pipe structure includes a carcass made from an arrangement of hoop segments that join to form a series of articulating joints. A hard yet flexible outer shell is formed around the carcass. The hoop segments are reinforced with fiber to increase strength and reduce weight. The shell anchors to the carcass at intervals along its length to hold the hoop segments together, while providing the flexibility needed for deep water and other high pressure pipe applications.

Flexible high-pressure pipe structure

A technique for maintaining tension on fiber drawn from a spindle includes incorporating a permanent magnet brake into a spindle and controlling tension of fiber paid out from the spindle by rotating an adjustment plate of the permanent magnet brake with a motor. In some examples, a motor (e.g., a stepper motor) is coupled to the adjusting plate of the permanent magnet motor through a set of gears, a timing belt, or a similar transmission medium. Mechanical advantage afforded through gear reduction allows a very small motor to control a large amount of braking torque. Motor control may be accomplished for multiple spindles with little power.

Controlling spindle tension

An apparatus for wrapping material onto and around a pipe, the apparatus including a shaft, the shaft rotatable by a driving apparatus, a payout core containing material to be wrapped onto a pipe, the payout core releasably mounted on the shaft, a deflection arm assembly secured to the shaft for rotation by the shaft, rotation of the shaft rotating the deflection arm assembly with respect to the payout core so that the deflection arm assembly takes material from the payout core and wraps the material onto a pipe adjacent the deflection arm assembly, each of the shaft and deflection arm assembly having a central opening through which is movable the pipe as the pipe is being wrapped.

Systems and methods for making pipe liners

A helical braider for constructing a triaxially braided tubular member in which the angle formed by primary fiber relative to the longitudinal axis of the tubular member can be controlled independently of the corresponding angles formed by the remaining fibers. The helical braider includes a winder that applies a primary fiber at a selected winding rate and a braider that applies two helical fibers at a selected spin rate. The winder can include a winder motor and a winding station rotatable around the mandrel, while the braider can include a braider motor and a braiding station independently rotatable around the mandrel.
