An apparatus comprises an external device for communication with an implantable device. The external device includes a communication circuit configured to receive a communication signal from at least one other device different from the implantable device, a locating circuit configured to determine a location of the external device using the received communication signal, and a control circuit electrically coupled to the communication circuit and the locating circuit. The control circuit is configured to determine whether the determined location imposes a limit on functionality of an implantable device, and provide user access to an implantable device feature according to the determined location.

An implantable medical device (IMD) includes a tap sensor configured to detect an impact event occurring on the surface of the patient's body. The tap sensor is configured to determine whether the impact event (which may be, for example, a tap of a finger or hand upon a surface of the body) likely is a communication directed at the tap sensor. In response to determining that the impact event likely is a communication directed at the tap sensor, the IMD is configured to transition from a first state to a second state.

The interface can be used to indicate suggested electrode combinations or vectors in response to a first selection of an electrode. Tests can be performed on electrode combinations and vectors, and the results of the tests can be presented to a user using the interactive representation. In an example, test results can be analyzed by a processor and optionally used to program an implantable or ambulatory medical device.

The external device includes a communication circuit configured to receive a communication signal from at least a third device separate from the external device and the implantable device, a locating circuit configured to determine a location of the external device using the received communication signal, a port configured to receive user identity information into the external device, and a control circuit electrically coupled to the communication circuit, the locating circuit, and the port. The control circuit is configured to allow user access to an implantable device feature according to the determined location and received user identity information.

A system and method of programming a cardiac rhythm management device (CRM device) using an external programming device are described, where the user is presented with a list of highly-safe parameter adjustments. Input is received from the user selecting one or more of the highly-safe parameter adjustments. A programming session is initiated wherein the programming device establishes communication with the CRM device, and transmits the selected one or more highly-safe parameter adjustments to the CRM device.
