A transparent component portion includes a first weld surface and a first taper locking surface formed opposite from the first weld surface. An absorbing component portion includes a second weld surface and a second taper locking surface formed opposite from the second weld surface. The first and second taper locking surfaces cooperate to force and lock the first and second weld surfaces into abutting engagement for laser welding.

Taper-lock laser weld for an air induction component

An intake assembly includes an intake manifold comprising several interfitting sections attached to each other to define a plurality of air passages, and an EGR conduit within the intake manifold including openings in communication with each of the plurality of air passages. The EGR conduit is in communication with a source of exhaust gases and provides for the proximate and decentralized injection of exhaust gases into the intake manifold assembly. The intake manifold assembly also includes a passage that is in communication with a positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV) and a purge gas system. Gases from the PCV system and the gas purge system mix in the passage and then are communicated to the each of the air passages through individual opening passages.

Modular intake manifold and integrated air intake system

An intake manifold assembly () includes an inner shell () that is inserted into an outer shell (), and a cover () that seals the open end () of the outer shell (). The inner shell () includes dividers () that form air passages (). A laser device () is traversed along the outer surface of the outer shell () along a path () corresponds with the inner shell () to form a laser weld joint (). The intake manifold assembly () of this invention includes features and methods of assembly that improve the laser weld joints utilized to assemble the plastic intake manifold assembly (). Both design details and clamping detail are described, every known configuration of U type manifolds can be made by this technique. The technique provides high value and low cost. High reliability is a well known feature of laser welding.

Laser welded manifold

An active noise attenuation system includes a speaker housing for a speaker assembly that attenuates noise generated by an air induction system for a vehicle engine. The speaker housing is a generic housing formed from plastic that can be utilized with many different vehicle types. An air cleaner housing is positioned between the speaker housing and the engine for filtering out contaminants from the air before the air is drawn into the engine. Brackets are joined to the air cleaner and speaker housings for mounting the housings to a vehicle structure.

Mounting assembly for active noise attenuation system

An air cleaner, intake manifold, and valve cover are integrated together for attachment to a vehicle engine. The air cleaner is positioned directly between the intake manifold and valve cover to provide a compact induction module. The induction module is mounted to the engine as a single unit. A throttle body is also incorporated into the intake manifold. A tube interconnects the air cleaner and the throttle body. An air filter is installed within the air cleaner to remove contaminants from air prior to entry into the tube.

Fuel vapors permeating from the fuel rail () are trapped in the cavity () and channeled back into the air intake passages (). The air cleaner assembly () includes a filter () for absorbing fuel vapor emissions from unburned fuel escaping a non-operating engine (). An actuator () moves the filter () between an open and closed position. Once the engine begins operation, the actuator () opens the filter () to allow unrestricted airflow through the intake manifold ().

An HQ tube arrangement suitable for packaging within a vehicle may be designed by creating a mathematical model representing a tube arrangement having a first passageway and a second passageway fluidly connected to the first passageway at first and second junctions. The second passageway is divided by the junctions into first, second, and third passages. Lengths are associated with each of the first passageway and the first, second, and third passages. A filter parameter, based upon an average transmission loss for a particular frequency over a standard deviation, is analyzed as a function of the lengths. Lengths are chosen based upon analysis of the filter parameter. Portions of the outer walls of the first and second passageways may be secured to or common to one another so that lengths of the passageways run along side of each other to provide a more compact HQ tube arrangement.

A modular air induction assembly comprises an air induction body, an air filter operatively attached to the air induction body, and a speaker operatively attached to the air induction body. The modular air induction assembly is then installed into the air induction system of a vehicle during production. The air induction body may also comprise a first portion and a second portion that permits service of the assembly following initial vehicle installation.

Integrated and active noise control inlet

A carrier for mounting to an internal combustion engine having an intake manifold port, a fuel injector and a cylinder head port extending from a cylinder head. The carrier includes a central portion having an internal passageway for providing fuel to the fuel injector. An attachment portion extends from the central portion which is affixed between the cylinder head and the intake manifold ports. The carrier further includes a sleeve extending from the central portion for receiving the fuel injector, which is sealed by the sleeve and an O-ring. The fuel injector, port seals, injector O-ring, wiring harness, connector and fuel rail are integrated into a single carrier to provide sealing, electrical connectivity, and fuel delivery functions.

A method and apparatus is provided for the attachment of a throttle shaft to a throttle body. A throttle shaft, a spring, and a cap retainer, are temporarily assembled as a throttle shaft subassembly. A set of locking members extend from the cap retainer to engage a set of locking surfaces adjacent the throttle shaft to retain the spring in tension. The cap retainer fits onto a boss extending from the throttle body and is lockable thereto by a set of fingers which are received into engagement recesses located on the boss. As the shaft subassembly is guided into the throttle body, the cap retainer is rotated by the engagement surfaces and the locking members are disengaged from the locking surfaces to at least partially unload the spring to mount the shaft.
