The method provides talk around in an OFDMA communication system by sending a talk around request from a subscriber unit to a base unit. At the subscriber unit a RSSI (received signal strength indication) of a signal received from the base unit is determined and sent back to the base unit, in the base unit the RSSI is compared to a predetermined window, if the RSSI is above the window, the request from the subscriber unit is denied, if the RSSI is within the window, a sub-channel of the OFDMA communication system and a power level are assigned to the subscriber unit, the subscriber unit thereby going into talk around mode, if the RSSI is below the window, the subscriber unit does not respond and the subscriber unit goes into a direct communication mode independent of the OFDMA communication system.

Communication system with controlled talk around mode

The method provides talk around in the communication system by sending a talk around request from one of the subscriber unitsto the base unit. At the subscriber unit a RSSI (received signal strength indication) of a signal received from the base unit is determined and sent back to the base unit. In the base unitthe RSSI is compared to a predetermined window. If the RSSI is above the window, the request from the subscriber unit is denied. If the RSSI is within the window, a frequency channel and power level are assigned to the subscriber unit, the subscriber unit thereby going into talk around mode. If the RSSI is below the window, the subscriber unit does not respond and the subscriber unit goes into a direct communication mode independent of the communication system.

An optical interconnect system includes a stacked arrangement of optical lightpipe layers, one layer assigned to each emitter of the system. The various optical lightpipe layers are designed to provide the same level of light to each receptor of the system. The optical lightpipe layers are very thin, allowing the emitter and receptor devices of the system to span the entire optical lightpipe layer assembly. The path loss between every emitter and every receptor over the entire system can be balanced, i.e., made substantially the same, or otherwise set as desired with respect to individual emitters and receptors.

To achieve this a modulator 102 generates the single information stream by modulating the data on the frequency reference and pre-empting the data modulation to modulate the time reference on the frequency reference. The base stations 103-105 each include a demodulator 107-109, which recovers the frequency reference 117, the time reference 118, and/or the data 116, from the single information stream.

A data transmission scheme for use in a low channel bandwidth-to-modulation symbol rate ratio (BW:R.sub.S) application employing a linear modulator for producing in-phase and quadrature (I and Q) components of a data stream inputted at a predetermined symbol rate. This transmission method allows for the recovery of signals having unfavorable delay spread characteristics. That is, a specialized function is used to process the I and Q components, whose time domain transfer characteristic remains within a predetermined range of a data constellation point for a duration that exceeds 25 percent of a symbol period corresponding to the predetermined symbol rate. The processed response is then band-limited to produce a modulation signal that is usable in the low BW:R.sub.S application.

Adjustment of the output frequency of a frequency synthesizer can be optimized in the following manner. Once a frequency adjustment request is detected, which indicates a selected frequency, a frequency difference is calculated between the selected frequency and the present frequency. A frequency scaling factor is then determined. Once the frequency difference and the frequency scaling factor are determined, a frequency adjustment time is calculated based on a proportional relationship between the frequency difference and the frequency scaling factor. The bandwidth of a multi-bandwidth filter is adjusted to a second bandwidth for the duration of the calculated frequency adjustment time. The output frequency of the frequency synthesizer is adjusted from the present frequency to the selected frequency prior to the expiration of the frequency adjustment time. Upon expiration of the frequency adjustment time, the bandwidth of the multi-bandwidth filter is adjusted from the second bandwidth to the first bandwidth.

A transmission line resonator assembly (100) employs a method and apparatus for adjusting its resonant frequency. The transmission line resonator assembly (100) comprises a resonator portion (101) and an electrically conductive member (102). The resonator portion (101) is operable at the resonant frequency and includes a transmission line (103) that is disposed on a dielectric material (104). A first portion (106) of the transmission line (103) is electrically coupled to a signal common (109) by a first coupling impedance. The electrically conductive member (102) includes a first deflectable surface (113) lying substantially along a first plane (201) and is coupled to the resonator portion (101) and the signal common (109), such that the first deflectable surface (113) is positioned substantially adjacent to the transmission line (103). By deflecting at least a portion of the first deflectable surface (113) with respect to the first plane (201), the first coupling impedance is altered, thereby adjusting the resonant frequency.

An enclosure system (100) is disclosed which has a conductive cover shield (102) which is retained in contact with a substrate (104) having a radio frequency (RF) circuit disposed thereon. The enclosure system (100) is made up of a conductive area (116), disposed on the substrate (104) peripherally about the electrical circuit which is then connected to the conductive cover shield (102). This connection allows for substantial horizontal displacement (305, 305') of the substrate material (104). The natural resilience of the substrate (104) material then allows for substantial vertical displacement of the conductive cover shield (102) with respect to the substrate (104) without substantial loss of contact pressure between the conductive cover shield (102) and the conductive area (116). Additionally, this form of connection provides for at least partial isolation of the RF energy from an environment outside of the enclosure system.
