Apparatus for determining the velocity of a gas in a gas supply duct is provided. The apparatus comprises a flow nozzle and a pitot tube. The flow nozzle has an inlet opening for receiving the gas and an outlet opening for expelling the gas after it has accelerated through a throat connecting the openings. The throat narrows in a curve from the inlet opening to outlet opening. The nozzle is mounted in the duct coaxially in a fluid-tight relationship therewith, the cross-sectional area of the duct and the cross-sectional area of the inlet opening being substantially identical. The cross-sectional area of the outlet opening is 40 to 60 percent that of the duct. The pitot tube comprises an impact tube and a static tube mounted in parallel through the duct downstream of the nozzle and both bending upstream toward the nozzle parallel to the duct axis. The opening of the impact tube is located in the volume bound by the cross-sectional area of the outlet opening and a distance of up to 6.25 percent of the duct inside diameter downstream of the outlet opening. The static tube has a plurality of apertures in the portion located in the volume bounded by the cross-sectional area of the outlet opening and a distance of up to 12.5 percent of the duct inside diameter downstream of the outlet opening.

Apparatus for measuring gas velocity

A muffler is provided for use in conjunction with a jet for treating a running length of yarn. Audible noise which is emitted by the jet is reduced by at least 11.5 .DELTA.dB(A) through the use of a housing to substantially enclose the jet. The housing has openings for the entrance and exit of a yarn and is at least partially lined with sound absorbing material; sound absorbing material also closes the openings in the housing. The travelling yarn abrades through the sound absorbing material at the openings to form an operational passage to and from the jet.

A spin pot, for the extrusion of one or more ends of multifilament, synthetic fibers, which essentially eliminates all stagnant zones caused by nonuniform flow patterns while yielding yarns of high quality at high extrusion rates for an extended period between spin pot changes. 'Plug flow' is achieved throughout the passage of polymer through the spin pot by the design of the internal parts wherein: the optimum number and location of polymer delivery channels in the top cap are defined, polymer flow throughout the spin pot is streamlined, and improved sealing characteristics are provided by the design of the top cap and the breaker plate.

A noise reduction system is disclosed for use with a draw point localizing jet which has yarn passages, a string-up slot, and conduits for admitting treating fluid thereinto. The system comprises an exhaust muffler and access slot silencing means. The exhaust muffler comprises a housing lined with removable inserts of heat resistant, metallic sound absorbing material. The exhaust muffler has a hinged door operating in conjunction with the access slot silencing means. The muffler and access slot silencing means open and close for string-up and operation. The system lowers the overall noise level of the jet by muffling the noise sources during operation.

An insert is disclosed to reduce noise for apparatus to prevent melted yarn stopped in high temperature yarn texturing jet. The insert is a cylinder at the outlet of the orifice emitting a cooling, diluting and diverting fluid, such as air, to prevent yarn when stopped in the steam texturing jet from being melted. The insert comprises a cylinder having a series from about 5 to 10 cylindrical openings evenly distributed across the orifice and with axes parallel to the orifice axis. The cylindrical openings preferably have a length to diameter ratio of from about 5 to about 10.

A muffler for use in conjunction with an interfloor tube and aspirating means during the production of multifilament, synthetic yarn is provided. Audible noise which is emitted at the exit end of the interfloor tube is reduced by up to 33.5 .DELTA.dB(A) and brought to within acceptable levels through the use of a perforated tube, resonant chambers, and sound absorbing means.

A muffler for use in conjunction with an aspirator during the production of multifilament, synthetic yarn is provided. Audible noise which is emitted at the inlet end of the aspirator is reduced by up to 22.5 .DELTA.dB(A) and brought to within acceptable levels through the use of a perforated tube, resonant chamber, and sound absorbing means. The tension of the aspirated yarn is maintained by finishing the muffler inlet end with a high RMS surface.
