Systems and methods for enabling communication in a downhole power and communications system installed in a well, where one or more components of a wired backbone of the system have failed. Equipment positioned at the surface of a well is connected to a wired power and communication backbone that has one or more conductors and one or more nodes with standardized interfaces that enable downhole devices to be interchangeably connected to the wired backbone. When the wired backbone has failed at one or more points, preventing wired communications between the surface equipment and one or more downhole devices installed at the nodes, one or more wireless-enabled modules are installed at corresponding nodes of the wired backbone to establish wireless channels that bridge the failed portion of the wired backbone and thereby enable communication between the surface equipment and the downhole devices.

Systems and methods for backup communications

A method and apparatus for determining a pressure in an annulus between an inner casing and an outer casing. An acoustic transducer is disposed within the casing at a selected depth within the inner casing and is configured to generate an acoustic pulse and receive a reflection of the acoustic pulse from the inner casing. A time of flight is measured of the acoustic pulse to the inner surface of the inner casing. An inner diameter of the inner casing is determined from the time of flight. The pressure in the annulus is determined from the inner diameter. A processor can be used to measure time and determine inner diameter and annulus pressure.

An compact instrumented downhole coupling that includes a carrier and a set of sensors and electronics that are installed within the carrier. The carrier is a tubular structure having couplings at each end and a bore extending through the carrier from the first end to the second end, forming a carrier wall between the bore and the exterior surface of the carrier. The bore and couplings are offset from a central axis of the carrier (the axis of the cylindrical outer surface of the carrier), resulting in a thicker portion of the carrier wall on one side of the carrier. Cavities are formed (e.g., by drilling holes) within the thicker portion of the carrier wall. One or more sensors and corresponding electronics are then positioned within the cavities, so that the carrier wall itself forms a housing for the sensors and electronics.

An apparatus for applying a magnetic pressure to a work piece includes an inductor configured to be disposed in proximity to the work piece and a controller electrically connected to the inductor and configured to control a supply of electrical power in order to output a first voltage over a selected frequency range to determine a frequency that provides a maximum current or a frequency that provides a current within a selected range of the maximum current to the inductor.

An apparatus for applying a magnetic pressure to a work piece includes an inductor configured to be disposed in proximity to the work piece and a controller electrically connected to the inductor. The controller is configured to control a supply of electrical power in order to output a first voltage over a selected frequency range to determine a first frequency that provides a maximum current to the inductor or a second frequency that provides a current within a selected range of the maximum current to the inductor.

A signal transmission system including a first transducer mounted to a surface of a member, a second transducer movable into contact with a second surface of the member, a material disposed between the second transducer and the second surface of the member. A method for communicating acoustic energy through a member including pressing a second transducer to a second surface of the member, the member having a first transducer mounted to an opposite surface thereof, sandwiching a material between the second transducer and the second surface of the member, and transmitting a signal between the first transducer and the second transducer.

An apparatus for deploying one or more components of a borehole monitoring system includes a conductor assembly having one or more communication devices connected along a length of a conductor, each communication device being configured to wirelessly communicate data and/or power, the conductor configured to transmit the data and/or the power through a borehole in an earth formation. The apparatus further includes a deployment device configured to transport and support the length of the conductor having the one or more communication devices connected along the length of the conductor and deploy the length of the conductor in the borehole.

A method of managing data obtained in a borehole is provided. The method includes monitoring a characteristic with at least one sensor and obtaining raw data therefrom; indexing the raw data with the at least one sensor; recording the indexed data with the at least one sensor; forming a data packet with the at least one sensor, the data packet including at least a portion of the indexed data and index information; and transmitting the data packet in a predetermined segment of a communication protocol.

Communications protocol for downhole data collection

The present disclosure relates to apparatuses and methods for terminating communication on a communication line between a carrier and at least one node located at a subsurface location. The apparatus may include a control member configured to initiate termination of communication in response to a controlled signal. The apparatus may also include a communication linkage configured to terminate the communication in a manner that cannot be remotely restored in response to the control member. The apparatus may also include a power source to maintain power to the communication linkage termination operation. The apparatus may be configured to use energy from the communication line to cause the communication linkage to terminate communication. The apparatus may be configured to use a communication linkage that is at least partially consumable. The method includes the use of the apparatus.

Method and devices for terminating communication between a node and a carrier

Provided are multiple correlations for relationships between MI value for a brightstock extract and the distillation cut point temperature used for separation of the vacuum resid that is used to form the brightstock extract. Based on these correlations, a BSE having a desired MI value can be formed based on an adjustment of the distillation cut point temperature. A first correlation establishes a relationship between a fractional weight boiling temperature for a vacuum resid fraction and a distillation cut point temperature for separating the vacuum resid fraction from at least one distillate fraction in a feedstock. A second correlation establishes a relationship between a fractional weight boiling temperature for a brightstock extract derived from the vacuum resid fraction, and the fractional weight boiling temperature for the vacuum resid fraction. A third correlation has been established between the fractional weight boiling temperature for the brightstock extract and a mutagenicity index value.

A system monitors and controls the injection of additives into formation fluids recovered through a well may include a plurality of nozzles that receive the injection fluid from an umbilical disposed in a well. Each nozzle may have an associated flow control element that is configured to affect a flow of the injection fluid ejected through the associated nozzle. The umbilical may include one or more filters positioned in a first of two parallel conduits formed along the umbilical. An occlusion member restricts in a second of the two conduits. The occlusion member permits flow in the second conduit after a predetermined pressure differential exists in the second conduit. The system may include a plurality of pressure sensors disposed along the umbilical, and an injector unit that dispenses fluid into the umbilical. A controller operatively coupled to the injector unit operates the injector in response to measurements from the pressure sensors.

Each of the plurality of conductors is electrically conductively connected to at least one of the plurality of addressed downhole devices and at least one of the plurality of remote devices. A method and related system calibrating downhole tools for drift. Some of the illustrative embodiments are a logging tool comprising a tool body, a transmitter antenna associated with the tool body, a transmitter electronics coupled to the transmitter antenna, a first receiver antenna associated with the tool body, a first receiver electronics coupled to the first receiver antenna, and a signal generator separate from the first transmitter electronics, the signal generator coupled to the first receiver electronics, and the first signal generator provides a calibration signal to the first receiver electronics.

Method and system for calibrating downhole tools for drift

High temperature imaging devices are disclosed. In one embodiment, the imaging device comprises an array of photosensitive elements fabricated on an insulator substrate, and an information storage component coupled to the array. The information storage component stores data representing one or more light patterns detected by the array. The light patterns may be images or spectral patterns. The insulator substrate may be a sapphire or spinel substrate. Alternatively, the substrate may be silicon carbide or an insulated silicon substrate. In at least some embodiments, a processor is integrated on the same substrate as the array.
