A conductive elastomeric and mechanical pin and contact system for creation of a Elastromechanical Connector () that combines Mechanical Pins, an Insulator Array with Conductive Elastromeric Memory Material. This combination provides a low cost, high density, reliable, reusable electronic interconnect system. This system can be used in place of most connector systems in use today. It replaces any connector that uses pins and sockets and also supports the fine conductor pitch required in the semiconductor business like Ball Grid Array (BGA) Sockets and related devises. The inventive device includes mechanical pins (), installed in an insulator (), each mechanical pin is topped with conductive elastromeric compound (). A mechanical pin is used for each connection point, the insulator positions the mechanical pins in an array pattern appropriate to the interconnection requirement. A conductive elastromeric compound is added to each metal pin to create the Z axis electrical coplanality to the mating unit. This connector will mate between printed circuit boards, packaged electronic assembles, BGAs or LGA type products, harnesses or cables without the need of solder or pins and sockets. Eliminating solder or pins and sockets reduces the pitch between connections. Mechanical pins are plated drawn, formed or machined conductive metal alloys. Insulator is molded or machined out of engineered plastic examples being, but not limited to, FR-4, Ultem&#xae;, Polyimide, Torlon&#xae;. Electrically conductive elastromeric compounds made up of flexible silicone and rubbers with conductive compounds added.

Process for fabricating a connector

A process to make a connector is enclosed. The claimed embodiment comprises the following steps. First, design an insulating substrate using a customer specification. Second, program a Computer Numerical Control machine tool to form holes in the insulating substrate according to the design made in step one. Third, program a computer controlled dispensing machine tool to dispense conductive polymer into each hole formed in step 2. Fourth, form holes in the insulating substrate using the programmed Computer Numerical Control machine tool. Fifth, place a pin in each hole. Sixth, using a computer controlled automated dispensing machine, dispense electrically conductive polymer into each hole around the pin. And, finally, cure the polymer to hold the pin in place.

Method of making a conductive elastomeric coplanar connector with mechanical pin

A male connector, including: a body having a proximal end and a distal end; and an elastomeric member disposed around an outer surface of the distal end of the body, wherein the distal end of the body is configured to be received into a female connector interface in a medical device, and wherein the proximal end of the body is configured to receive an electronic block connector therein.

A micro solder pot includes a dielectric substrate having at least one hole formed therein, a conductive coating coupled to the interior of the hole, and at least one heat transfer pad spaced from the hole in thermal communication with the conductive coating of the hole. When the heat transfer pad is exposed to a heat source, the conductive coating inside the hole is heated. The micro solder pot may also include a thermally activated conductive material disposed within the hole. When the heat transfer pad is exposed to a heat source, the thermally activated conductive material becomes liquidus such that a component can be inserted into the liquidus material. When the heat source is removed, the thermally activated conductive material cools to couple the component to the conductive coating in the hole.

Another embodiment substitutes a metal plated through hole for the pin and uses elastomeric flex dots on both ends of the through hole.

Conductive elastomeric and mechanical pin and contact system

A male connector includes a body and an elastomeric member. The body has a proximal end and a distal end. The elastomeric member is disposed around an outer surface of the distal end of the body. The distal end of the body is configured to be received into a female connector interface in a device. The proximal end of the body is configured to couple with an electronic block connector selected from a plurality of electronic block connectors, each of which has a different pin arrangement but a common coupling interface.

A power transfer pad, having: a non-conductive board having a top and a bottom; a plurality of conductive substrate sections disposed across the top of the non-conductive board; at least one conducting element disposed on each of the conductive substrate sections; a plurality of electrical contacts on the bottom of the non-conductive board, wherein each of the electrical contacts on the bottom of the non-conductive board are in electrical communication with one of the conductive substrate sections on the top of the non-conductive board.

Direct contact power transfer pad and method of making same

A mechanical limiter switch for use in a medical or surgical device has a substantially cylindrically shaped housing with a perimeter and an opening in an axial direction. The housing has a pattern along the perimeter. A spring is mounted in the opening along the axial direction, and is pre-stressed for movement in a radial direction and pre-stressed for movement in the axial direction. The spring has a radial member protruding through the pattern of the housing. A plunger is mounted in the opening along the axial direction, abutting the spring for urging the spring in the axial direction and for moving the member in the pattern along the perimeter. After a pre-determined number of activations of the plunger in the axial direction, the member will come to a terminating position and will either contact a pin to establish electrical continuity or at the terminating position break electrical continuity.

A disposable surgical device is constructed to include a shell, a smart block mounted in one end of the shell, the smart block electronic having components mounted to a circuit embedded therein, front contact pins for insertion into respective contact holes in the connector of an industry standard connector interface, and rear wire terminal points, a medical treatment terminal installed in the other side of the shell and adapted for performing surgery and treatments, and a flex circuit termination electrically connected between the smart block and the medical treatment terminal, the flex circuit termination having embedded conductor lines respectively connected to the medical treatment terminal and wire terminal points at the ends of the conductor lines respectively soldered to the wire terminal points of the smart block.

A low noise clock oscillator in modular form to plug into a standard 14 or 8 pin DIP clock oscillator socket on the motherboard of a host device to retrofit the host device without redesign of the host device motherboard so that the host device can reduce its EMC emissions sufficiently to pass EMC emission tests. The oscillator is characterized by use of a spread spectrum clock generator, EMC filters between the clock generator and the Vcc, ground and clock bus coupling points to the motherboard and a single point ground connection to the motherboard. This oscillator module allows an easy retrofit to a host device that has already been designed to substantially lower EMC emissions that can be traced to the clock by as much as 20 dB without expensive, time consuming redesign efforts to add shielding, more grounds and possibly reroute the motherboard traces.
