A refractory boride body or coating made of a boride of titanium, chromium, vanadium, ziconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, molybednum and cerium is produced from a slurry of the refractory boride or a precursor in a collidal carrier preferably composed of two more different grades of the same colloidal carrier selected from colloidal alumina, yttria, ceria, thoria, zirconia, magnesia, lithia, monoaluminum phosphate and cerium acetate. The slurry can also comprise an organic additive selected from polyvinyl alcohol; polyacrylic acid; hydroxyy propyl methyl cellulose; polythylene glycol; ethylene glycol, butyl benzyl phthalate; ammonium polymethacrylate and mixtures thereof. The retractory boride body or coated body is useful as a component of aluminum electrowinning cells.

Slurry and method for producing refractory boride bodies and coatings for use in aluminium electrowinning cells

A carbon body, in particular a pre-baked anode of an electrolytic cell for the production of aluminium by the electrolysis of alumina in a molten fluoride electrolyte is treated over its surfaces to improve the resistance thereof to deterioration during operation of the cell by air and oxidizing gases released at the anode, by treating the body with a treating liquid comprising a precipitable boron-containing compound and an additive, said additive being present in an amount so that substantially no separate phase from said the precipitate of said boron-containing compound is formed upon curing. Suitable boron oxide additives include colloidal alumina, silica, yttria, ceria, thoria, zirconia, magnesia, lithia, monoaluminium phosphate, cerium acetate and mixtures thereof. The same treatment can also be applied to a carbon mass forming a Soderberg anode and to cell sidewalls.

A carbon body, in particular a prebaked anode of an electrolytic cell for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina in a molten fluoride electrolyte, is treated over its surfaces to improve the resistance thereof to deterioration during operation of the cell by air and oxidizing gases released at the anode, by immersing the body in a treating liquid containing a soluble boron compound and at least one aluminum compound and/or at least one calcium compound as a powder, suspension or colloid or in solution, e.g. at 80.degree. to 120.degree. C. The same treatment can also be applied to a carbon mass forming a Soderberg anode and to cell sidewalls. The addition of the aluminum and/or calcium compound(s) increases strength and improves oxidation resistance compared to impregnation with boric acid alone.

A porous membrane produced by preparing a slurry made from at least one micropyretic substance and at least one liquid carrier. The slurry is dried into a green form having a desired geometric configuration. Combustion of the green form produces the porous membrane.

An anode for the electrowinning of aluminium by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in a molten fluoride electrolyte comprises a porous combustion synthesis product of nickel, aluminium, iron, copper and optional doping elements in the amounts 60-90 wt % nickel, 3-10 wt % aluminium, 5-20 wt % iron, 0-15 wt % copper and 0-5 wt % of one or more of chromium, manganese, titanium, molybdenum, cobalt, zirconium, niobium, yttrium, cerium, oxygen, boron and nitrogen. The combustion synthesis product contains metallic and intermetallic phases. A composite oxide surface is produced in-situ by anodic polarization of the porous combustion synthesis product in a molten fluoride electrolyte containing dissolved alumina. The in-situ formed composite oxide surface comprises an iron-rich relatively dense outer portion, and an aluminate-rich relatively porous inner portion.

A carbon containing material for use in particular as an anode of electrolytic cells for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina in a cryolite-based electrolyte, consists substantially of a mixture of one or more particulate carbonaceous material(s) with a binder based on compounds of aluminum with carbon, oxygen and/or nitrogen, such as aluminum carbide or aluminum oxycarbide, or such compounds mixed with aluminum. This binder is obtained by mixing the particulate carbonaceous material(s) with particulate aluminum and with at least one lithium compound and/or with at least one aluminum compound in a liquid carrier, and heat treating to form the binder. The liquid carrier may comprise a binding agent selected from methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and colloidal suspensions, in particular colloidal alumina.

In a data processing system network, apparatus and method are disclosed for coupling two local area networks by means of a wireless link. Typically, two local area network (LAN) systems are coupled by a bridge device, the bridge device receiving signal groups from each LAN system and selectively forwarding the signal groups to the target LAN system.
