Presently disclosed is a power production plant that is operable to store and generate power. In a 'charge mode' (when electricity price is low), an air separation unit (ASU) cools and liquefies ambient air into liquid oxygen (LOx), which is then stored in a storage vessel. In a “discharge mode” (when electrical price is high), the stored LOx is used by the power production plant to combust a fuel and form a combustion product stream that can be expanded in a turbine to generate power. The power production plant particularly can utilize carbon dioxide as a recycled, circulating or working fluid so that substantially all carbon dioxide produced in the power production can be captured.

An internally-cooled diaphragm for an internally-cooled compressor is provided. The internally-cooled diaphragm may include an annular body configured to cool a process fluid flowing through a fluid pathway of the internally-cooled compressor. The annular body may define a return channel of the fluid pathway, and a cooling pathway in thermal communication with the fluid pathway. The return channel may be configured to at least partially diffuse and de-swirl the process fluid flowing therethrough, and the cooling pathway may be configured to receive a coolant to absorb heat from the process fluid flowing through the return channel.

Methods and apparatus for an oxy-fuel combustion power cycle are provided, including converting gaseous carbon dioxide to liquid and/or supercritical carbon dioxide which may include the use of a cryogenic pump, removing a portion of the liquid and/or supercritical carbon dioxide from the cycle, combusting oxygen and a combustion fuel with the remaining liquid and/or supercritical carbon dioxide in an oxy-fuel combustor to generate steam and additional liquid and/or supercritical carbon dioxide which replaces the portion of the liquid and/or supercritical carbon dioxide sequestered from the cycle.

Methods and apparatus for an oxy-fuel based power cycle

An internally-cooled centrifugal compressor having a shaped casing and a diaphragm disposed within the shaped casing having a gas side and a coolant side so that heat from a gas flowing though the gas side is extracted via the coolant side. An impeller disposed within the diaphragm has a stage inlet on one side and a stage outlet for delivering a pressurized gas to a downstream connection. The coolant side of the diaphragm includes at least one passageway for directing a coolant in a substantially counter-flow direction from the flow of gas through the gas side.

A compressor plate valve having a valve seat, a valve guard and a valve plate. The valve plate is moveable between the valve guard and valve seat to control fluid passage through passages in the seat, the guard, and the plate. A valve stem passes through the center of the valve guard and is attached to the center of the valve plate. The valve stem provides guidance for the plate valve to ensure parallel motion. In addition to sealing surfaces that oppose passages, the seat and plate have landing surfaces that provide a braking effect when the valve closes through squeeze film action.

One embodiment provides for a liquids/solids reaction vessel configured to contain a mixture of at least one liquid and at least one solid. The vessel includes a closed perimeter wall defined by an effective height, and a bottom connected to the closed perimeter wall to thereby define a vessel volume configured to contain the mixture. The reaction vessel further includes a solids extraction system located in at least one of the bottom or in the perimeter wall proximate the bottom. The effective height is selected to produce a pressure proximate the bottom of the reaction vessel selected to eject the at least one solid through the solids extraction system under the influence of gravity alone. The effective height can be further selected to cause an increase in a reaction rate between the at least one liquid and the at least one solid.
