Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive, non-radioactive, and low cost technology for diagnosis and identification of implantable medical devices in real time. Developing new ultrasound activated coatings is important to broaden the utility of in vivo marking by ultrasound imaging. Ultrasound responsive macro-phase segregated micro-composite thin films were developed to be coated on medical devices composed of multiple materials and with multiple shapes and varying surface area. The macro-phase segregated in films having silica micro-shells in polycyanoacrylate produces strong color Doppler signals with the use of a standard clinical ultrasound transducer. Electron microscopy showed a macro-phase separation during slow curing of the cyanoacrylate adhesive, as air-filled silica micro-shells were driven to the surface of the film. The air sealed in the hollow space of the silica shells acted as an ultrasound contrast agent and echo decorrelation of air exposed to ultrasound waves produces color Doppler signals.

Ultrasound responsive micro-composite markers

A composition for coating a medical device and a coated medical device are provided. The composition includes a polymeric matrix having non-toxic quantum dots or a fluorophore or both. The polymeric matrix contains the quantum dots or fluorophore and binds as a coating to the medical device. Coated medical devices can be readily identified within or outside of a body and in open or laparoscopically surgeries, greatly reducing or eliminating the risk of a retained foreign object.

Disclosed herein is an ultrasound imaging apparatus and a controlling method thereof. The ultrasound imaging apparatus includes a controller configured to generate a control signal to control an operation of a probe, and a transceiver configured to transmit the control signal to the probe and to receive a signal transmitted from the probe. The controller may control the operation of the probe so that the probe may irradiate focused ultrasound energy when contrast agents composed of a silica nanostructure are injected into an object, and the controller may control the operation of the probe so that the probe may irradiate diagnostic ultrasound energy when the focused ultrasound energy is irradiated.

An electron emitting structure that produces a substantially uniform electric field resulting in a substantially straight electron emission. In a preferred form, the electron emitting structure is used as a cathode plate of a field emission display (FED). In one embodiment, an electron emitting structure comprises a substrate, a first electrode formed on the substrate, a second electrode crossing over an active region of the first electrode, and an insulating material separating and electrically insulating the first and second electrodes. A plurality of openings are formed in at least a portion of the second electrode crossing over the active region. And, an electron emitting material is deposited on at least a portion of the active region of the first electrode, portions of the electron emitting material not underneath respective ones of the plurality of openings of the second electrode.

Field emission cathode structure using perforated gate

An electron emitting structure having deflectable electrodes, such as found in grating light valves (GLVs) is provided. In one implementation, the structure includes a substrate having base electrodes and gate electrodes coupled thereto and insulated from each other, and an emitting material deposited on active regions of the base electrodes. Upon applying a voltage potential difference between a base electrode and a gate electrode, a portion of one of the base electrode and the gate electrode deflects through electrostatic force positioning the portion of the one of the base electrode and the gate electrode relative to another one of the base electrode and the gate electrode such that an electric field is produced that is sufficient to cause an emission from an emitting material deposited on the base electrode. In preferred form, lower drive voltages are required to provide the electric field without requiring sub-micron spacing between electrodes.

Field emission display with deflecting MEMS electrodes

The spread spectrum wireless position determinator, ranging, and communication system is disclosed in this invention. The system consists of handheld or otherwise mobile apparatus which can be hand-carried or installed in the carts or vehicles, fixed-position reference stations deployed throughout the vicinity of the operating region of interests, and a central reference station. The mobile apparatus includes a spread spectrum transceiver, an input unit, and an output unit, which supports four functions: 1). accurately determines its position within the operating region and distance to pre-defined features within the region, 2). provides a voice communications with another mobile apparatus or central reference station within the region, 3). transmits or receives data message which can be routed via the reference stations to the central station, or other mobile apparatus within the region, 4). displays various information or stores information entered by the operator. The central reference station also has a spread spectrum radio transceiver which can transmit and receive voice or data massage to and from any mobile apparatuses or reference stations within the region and a computer which collects and processes the radio data, maintains the databases for the operation of the system, or provides a man-machine interface for the system. The reference stations are deployed in strategic locations through the region such that the mobile apparatuses in any accessible location can communicate with one or more reference stations. All reference stations contain a spread spectrum transceiver, which supports the radiolocationing function initiated by the mobile apparatuses and relays any received data packets to other reference stations, central station, or mobile apparatuses.

Spread spectrum position determination, ranging and communication system

The invention disclosed herein is directed to a method and apparatus which employs a spread-spectrum based radiolocation system, using hand-held receiver units and fixed-position reference transmitters, to determine distance and direction between a golfer and key locations on a golf course, such as the distance and direction to a particular pin. The plurality of timing reference transmitters which are located throughout the vicinity of the golf course broadcast a spread-spectrum ranging signal consisting of a radio-frequency carrier directly modulated by a periodic pseudo-noise (PN) coded or similar sequence. Each transmitter broadcasts at the same RF signal but a unique PN-coded sequence is assigned to each transmitter. Golfers are provided with the hand-held receiving unit which receives the transmitter spread-spectrum signals and which synchronizes to the spread-spectrum signals in order to obtain range estimates to a selected set of reference transmitters. The hand-held receivers also include memory to store the coordinates of the reference transmitters and the pin positions and other reference points for each hole on the golf course, which are either pre-loaded into memory or transmitted (as modulating data) with the ranging signal. Each hand-held unit also includes a digital processor which incorporates a hyperbolic location algorithm to compute the hand-held unit position based on the estimated ranges to the selected transmitters and the reference transmitter coordinates. The distance and direction from the current position to the pin or other selected reference points is then displayed via an appropriate medium on the hand-held unit.
