A fluid sensing system includes a microfluidic chip, multiple sensors, and a communication device. The microfluidic chip includes at least one microfluidic channel extending a length through the microfluidic chip. The microfluidic chip is fluidly connected to a process fluid such that a fluid sample from the process fluid flows through the at least one microfluidic channel. The multiple sensors are operatively connected to the at least one microfluidic channel of the microfluidic chip. The multiple sensors are configured to monitor multiple different properties of the fluid sample within the at least one microfluidic channel. The communication device is operatively connected to the multiple sensors. The communication device is configured to receive data parameters representative of the multiple different properties of the fluid sample from the multiple sensors and wirelessly transmit the data parameters to a remote location.

Fluid sensing system

A composite formulation and a composite article are provided. The composite article includes at least two layers of a composite formulation including a polymer matrix and conductive particles distributed within the polymer matrix, the conductive particles forming, by volume, between 20% and 50% of the composite formulation. The conductive particles in each of the at least two layers include at least one morphology selected from the group consisting of fibrous, dendritic, and flake, and the morphology of the conductive particles in one of the at least two layers differs from the morphology of the conductive particles in another one of the at least two layers. The composite formulation includes a polymer matrix and between 30% and 45%, by volume, tin-coated copper conductive particles at a copper/tin ratio of between 3/1 and 3/2, the conductive particles including at least two morphologies selected from the group consisting of fibrous, dendritic, and flake.

Composite formulation and composite article

Processes of applying conductive composites on flexible materials, transfer assemblies, and garments including conductive composites are disclosed. The processes include positioning the conductive composite relative to the flexible material, the conductive composite having a resin matrix and conductive filler, and heating the conductive composite with an iron thereby applying the conductive composite directly onto the flexible material. Additionally or alternatively, the processes include positioning the conductive composite relative to the clothing, and heating the conductive composite thereby applying the conductive composite on the clothing. The garments include the flexible material and the conductive composite positioned directly on the flexible material. The transfer assembly has the conductive composite on a transfer substrate. The transfer substrate is capable of permitting heating of the conductive composite through the transfer substrate, the heating being at a temperature that permits applying the conductive composite to the flexible material.

An interposer for coupling an optical conduit to an optical component, said interposer comprising: (a) an optical component; (b) a first lens component having a first lens; (c) a second lens component having a second lens, said first and second lenses being configured to define an expanded-beam coupling therebetween; (d) at least one reflective surface optically coupled with said second lens; (e) a first optical path at least partially defined between said optical component and said first lens to accommodate a diverging light beam from said optical component to said first lens; (f) a second optical path at least partially defined between said second lens and said at least one reflective surface to accommodate a converging light beam from said second lens and said at least one reflective surface; and (g) a separable interface along said second optical path or at said expanded-beam coupling.

A circuit protection device includes a reflowable thermal fuse that shuts off current to a field-effect transistor if the field-effect transistor is overheating. In particular, the reflowable thermal fuse is integrated with the field-effect transistor to provide greater proximity between the field-effect transistor and the reflowable thermal fuse, thus providing efficient and accurate detection of an overtemperature condition in the field-effect transistor.

A protection circuit for use with a charger and a chargeable element, such as a rechargeable lithium ion battery, comprises a shunt regulator having a threshold ON voltage coupled in parallel across the chargeable element, and a temperature-dependent resistor, e.g., a positive temperature coefficient device, coupled in series between the charger and the chargeable element. The temperature dependent resistor is thermally and electrically coupled to the shunt regulator, wherein the first variable resistor limits current flowing through the shunt regulator if the current reaches a predetermined level less than that which would cause failure of the regulator, due to ohmic heating of the regulator.

A process for manufacturing a composite polymeric circuit protection device in which a polymeric assembly is provided and is then subdivided into individual devices (). The assembly is made by providing first and second laminates (), each of which includes a laminar polymer element having at least one conductive surface, providing a pattern on at least one of the conductive surfaces on one laminate, securing the laminates in a stack () in a desired configuration, at least one conductive surface of at least one of the laminates forming an external conductive surface () of the stack, and making a plurality of electrical connections () between a conductive surface of the first laminate and a conductive surface of the second laminate. The laminar polymer elements may be PTC conductive polymer compositions, so that the individual devices made by the process exhibit PTC behavior. Additional electrical components may be attached directly to the surface of the device or assembly.

Process for manufacturing a composite polymeric circuit protection device

A laminar sensor ( ) for detecting changes on a laminar substrate ( ). The sensor includes a laminar sheet ( ) which has a first surface ( ) and a second opposite surface ( ), and is made from a conductive polymer composition which exhibits temperature dependent resistance behavior, preferably PTC behavior. A plurality of sensing elements ( ) are electrically connected, preferably in series, on the sensor. Each sensing element is formed as an electrode pair containing a first electrode and a second electrode. The first and second electrodes ( ) may be on the same surface of the laminar sheet or on opposite surfaces of the sheet. Two electrical leads ( ) are present for connecting the sensing elements into a circuit, which may be used to detect changes in resistance which occur when a sensing element is exposed to an elevated temperature, a change in pressure, or a solvent.

Devices and methods for protection of rechargeable elements

A generally rectangular, planar electrical overcurrent sensing device having a top major surface and a bottom major surface includes a patterned metal foil conductor defined along the top major surface. The metal foil conductor has a first electrode region at one end region, a second electrode region at an opposite end region, and a current-concentrating region extending between the first electrode portion and the second electrode portion. The device further includes a planar sheet of a composition which exhibits PTC behavior and which comprises an organic polymer having a particulate conductive filler dispersed therewithin. The planar sheet has a first major surface in thermal contact with the bridging portion and has an opposite second major surface. A third patterned metal foil electrode secured to the second major surface of the planar PTC sheet is sized and aligned with the current-concentrating region such that heat generated in the current-concentrating region from electrical overcurrent flowing through the metal foil conductor is transferred to the planar sheet exhibiting PTC behavior and reduces a control current flowing to said third patterned metal foil electrode. An insulation layer may be imposed between the patterned metal foil conductor and the PTC sheet layer, and in such case the third patterned metal foil electrode is divided into two conductive areas separated by a gap aligned with the current-concentrating region, thereby providing a four terminal device. Tin pellets may be included in the current-concentrating region to reduce a melting/fracture temperature thereof below a flaming temperature of the organic polymer sheet forming the PTC layer.

Circuit protection devices

Electrical devices, particularly circuit protection devices, contain conductive polymer elements whose edges are formed by breaking the conductive polymer element, along a desired path, without the introduction of any solid body into the element. The resulting cohesive failure of the conductive polymer produces a distinctive fractured surface. One method of preparing such devices involves etching fracture channels in the electrodes of a plaque containing a PTC conductive polymer element sandwiched between metal foil electrodes, and then snapping the plaque along the fracture channels to form individual devices.

Electrical device

A laminar sensor for detecting changes on a laminar substrate. The sensor includes a laminar sheet which has a first surface and a second opposite surface, and is made from a conductive polymer composition which exhibits PTC behavior. A plurality of sensing elements are electrically connected in series on the sensor. Each sensing element is formed as an electrode pair containing a first electrode and a second electrode. The first and second electrodes may be on the same surface of the laminar sheet or on opposite surfaces of the sheet. Two electrical leads are present for connecting the sensing elements into a circuit, which may be used to detect changes in resistance which occur when a sensing element is exposed to an elevated temperature, a change in pressure, or a solvent.

Sensor

An electrical device in which a resistive element composed of a conductive polymer composition and two electrodes is made by a method in which the device is cut from a laminate of the conductive polymer composition and the electrodes, is exposed to a thermal treatment at a temperature above the melting temperature of the conductive polymer composition, and is then crosslinked.

Method of making an electrical device comprising a conductive polymer

A conductive polymer composition which has a resistivity at 20.degree. C. of at most 1.0 ohm-cm and a PTC anomaly of at least 104 contains at most 64% by volume of a crystalline polymeric component and at least 36% by volume of a particulate conductive filler. A preferred conductive filler is carbon black having a DBP number of 60 to 120 cm.sup.3 /100 g. Compositions of the invention, as well as other conductive polymer compositions are preferably prepared by a method in which the polymeric component and the filler are blended in a first step at a temperature greater than the melting temperature of the polymer, the mixture is then cooled, and the mixture is then mixed in a second step. The resulting composition has a PTC anomaly that is at least 1.2 times the PTC anomaly of the first mixture.
