This invention relates generally to cyanine-containing compounds; pharmaceutical compositions comprising cyanine-containing compounds; and methods of using cyanine-containing compounds for cancer cell imaging, cancer cell growth inhibition, and detecting cancer cells, for example. Compounds of the invention are preferentially taken up by cancer cells as compared to normal cells. This allows many uses in the cancer treatment, diagnosis, tracking and imaging fields.

Cyanine-containing compounds for cancer imaging and treatment

This invention relates to new carbocyanine dye compositions, pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compositions, methods of detecting via near infrared fluorescent imaging incipient cancer cells and selective destruction of cancer cells identified by administration of such pharmaceutical compositions. A method of detecting and destroying cancer cells includes introducing a gold dye into an organism suspected of having a cancer cell. The gold dye is a carbocyanine dye covalently attached to a gold nanoparticle. A near infrared light is shined on a region suspected of having the cancer cell. Fluorescence from the gold dye is detected. A beam of radio frequency energy is directed at the region to induce hyperthermia in the cancer cell. The carbocyanine dye has the most basic structure of MHI-148 and structures 6 and 22 with a Au&#x2014;[CH(CH)CH&#x2014;(OCHCH)O]COCHCH-phenyl-O group on a cyclohexene ring that imparts activity to the cancer cell binding and destruction processes.

Method and dyes for detecting and destroying cancer cells

Thermoplastic composition and articles containing UV absorbers that protect the articles contents from harmful UV radiation are disclosed as well as methods for making the thermoplastic articles and methods for using the articles to contain and protect materials sensitive to UV radiation. The UV absorbers contain oxazolone and/or azine functional groups that absorb UV radiation and prevent its transmission into the article. Many of the compounds are novel compositions of matter. The generally clear thermoplastic articles of this disclosure are particularly useful for containing a variety of UV sensitive consumer products that would otherwise have to be packaged in opaque containers.

Provided are new compounds useful as near infrared fluorophoric markers. In the practice of this invention a method is also provided for tagging thermoplastic containers using near infrared fluorescing compounds or copolymerized residues readily capable of detection. The new compounds are phthalocyanine and naphthalocyanine derivatives which are covalently bonded to substituted silicon and aluminum compounds. The methods, compositions, and compounds described herein thus provide a total system useful for marking, for identification purposes, the various classes of thermoplastic wastes, so that they can be identified, sorted, and subsequently recycled.

This invention provides a method for imparting invisible markings for identification purposes to petroleum hydrocarbons by incorporating one or more infrared fluorescing compounds therein. Certain infrared fluorophores from the classes of squaraines (derived from squaric acid), phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines are useful in providing invisibly marked petroleum hydrocarbons such as crude oil, lubricating oils, waxes, gas oil (furnace oil), diesel oil, kerosene and in particular gasoline. Provided is a new process useful for preparing arylsulfonyl halides, which comprises the addition or drowning of halosulfonation reaction products, produced by the reaction of aromatic compounds (arenes), with excess halosulfonic acid, into C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 aliphatic ketones, preferably acetone, isopropyl alcohol, or mixtures thereof, instead of drowning into water as is known in the art of aromatic sulfonyl chloride preparation. Less heat of reaction is observed, thus making the drowning of the halosulfonation reaction mixture safer and more controllable.
