Polyamide compositions having improved flame retardant properties and arc tracking resistance comprises, in percent by weight, about 35 to about 76 percent polyamide; about 6 to about 10 percent zinc borate; about 10 to about 15 percent melamine cyanurate; 0 to about 35 percent glass fiber; about 0 to about 3 percent antimony trioxide; and about 8 to about 15 percent of a chlorinated compound of the formula: ##STR1##

Flame retardant polyamide compositions

New compounds are disclosed of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R' is phenyl, lower alkenyl and halogen substituted and unsubstituted lower alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, m is an integer from 1-2 wherein when m is 2, R is alkoxy of 1-8 carbon atoms and when m is 1, R is alkylene dioxy of 2-8 carbon atoms. The compounds of this invention are useful as flame retardant agents for textile materials and in the production of polymers and copolymers which possess flame retardant properties.

Brominated phosphoramidates of the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloro, bromo, and chloro or bromo substituted alkyl of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms; R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, hydroxy substituted alkyl of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and chloro or bromo substituted alkyl of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms; R.sup.4 is independently selected from the group consisting of R.sup.3 and a group of the structure ##STR2## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkylene of from 2 to 8 carbon atoms; phenylene, biphenylene and dicyclohexylene; provided that at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 contains a bromine atom and at least one of R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 contains a replaceable hydrogen. The phosphoramidates of the present invention are useful to impart a flame retardant property to combustible materials.

High impact thermoplastic polymers such as the styrenic based polymers, ABS and high impact polystyrene, are rendered fire retardant by the incorporation in the polymer of a mixture of a diadduct of hexahalocyclopentadiene and decabromodiphenyl oxide. The fire retardance of the compositions can be further enhanced by the incorporation therein of a metallic compound, particularly a compound of aluminum, zinc, arsenic, antimony or bismuth. A preferred metallic compound is antimony oxide.

Fire retardant polymer compositions with improved physical properties

New compounds are disclosed of the formula: ##EQU1## wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of phenyl, lower alkenyl and halogen substituted and unsubstituted lower alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, y is an integer from 1-2 provided that when y is 1, R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl of 2-8 carbon atoms, benzyl, dialkylphosphonoalkyl and phenoxymethylene and when y is 2, R is lower alkylene of 1-4 carbon atoms. The compounds of the invention are useful as flame retardant agents for textile materials and in the production of polymers and copolymers which possess flame retardant properties.

Phosphorus containing amides flame retardants

New compounds are disclosed of the formula: ##EQU1## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, phenyl and alkyl substituted phenyl and R' is selected from the group consisting of phenyl, lower alkenyl and halogen substituted and unsubstituted lower alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms. The compounds of this invention are useful as flame retarding agents for textile materials and in the production of polymers and copolymers which possess flame retardant properties.

Dialkyl alkyl and aromatic sulfonamidomethyl phosphonates

New flame retardant materials are disclosed having applied thereto compounds of the formula: ##SPC1## Wherein R is selected from the group consisting of phenyl, lower alkenyl and halogen substituted and unsubstituted lower alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, X is selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine and lower alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, m is an integer from 1-4 and n is an integer from 0-5, provided that the sum of m and n is not greater than 6 and when m is 1, n is greater than 0.
