The Extended Nip press apparatus of this invention has an endless loop nip blanket which is clamped at each end head by a circular array of twelve clamp segments which are positioned radially by the hydraulic actuation of an axially positionable circumferential clamp ring. The blanket is separately sealed by an air tube seal which extends between the clamp ring and the interior of the blanket. Because the clamping arrangement is independent of the seal, inadvertent loss of air pressure will not cause the blanket to become unclamped.

In an extended nip press employing an endless loop nip blanket the invention is a gear-actuated blanket edge clamp. The ends of the blanket are sealed to rotatably mounted heads and forced against sealing surfaces on the heads by shoes which are mounted radially about the heads. The shoes are pivotally mounted to main pivot links. These in turn are pivotally mounted to the head. A jack link joins each of the main links to an expanding gear ring. The gear ring is rotatably mounted to the head about the axis of the head's rotation. The gear ring has two opposed gear teeth segments. Two opposed pinion gears which are mounted on shafts ride on the geared sections. The shafts are turned from the exterior of the head, and cause the expanding gear ring to rotate. The rotation of the gear ring causes the jack links to press against the main links, causing the main links in turn to swing radially outwardly. The outward displacement of the main links causes the shoes to move outwardly against the clamping surface. A gear clamping ring is disposed inwardly of the gear ring and shoes, and is arranged to secure the shoes and ring gear against movement. During operation of the extended nip press, the blanket is held taut by internal pressure. In an alternative embodiment, the jack links have spring biasing to accommodate variations in link dimensions.

A method and apparatus for reeling a traveling web, such as the paper web produced on a papermaking machine, comprises the concept of winding the on-coming traveling web onto a reel spool which is horizontally supported rotatively, and which, in a preferred embodiment, moves translationally in a direction from the dry end of the papermaking machine towards the wet end of the papermaking machine as the diameter of the wound web roll increases. The reel spool is supported on a pair of spaced, substantially horizontally disposed rails. The on-coming web is first partially wrapped over a segment of a translationally movable support drum with the upper side of the web facing inwardly toward the surface of the support drum. The support drum is selectively nipped, or not nipped, with the reel spool/web over the web roll as it is commenced to be wound in a winding position, and continues to be wound into a web roll on a reel spool. As the web roll being wound increases in diameter, it is translationally moved upstream while being supported on the substantially horizontally disposed rails, and while torque is maintained on the reel spool.

Method and apparatus for reeling a traveling web into a wound web roll

A doctor for creping tissue from a surface of a Yankee dryer is provided. The doctor includes a frame and a support which extends from the frame. A swing arm is pivotally secured to the support about a pivotal bearing. The swing arm defines a further bearing. A pivot extends through the further bearing for rotatable movement relative to the swing arm such that the pivot is rotatably supported by the swing arm. A doctor is rigidly secured to the pivot for doctoring the tissue from the surface of the dryer. A blade is removably secured to the doctor, the blade defining an operative edge which cooperates with the surface of the Yankee dryer for creping the tissue from the surface of the dryer. A loader is operatively connected to the pivot for rotating the pivot within the further bearing for loading the operative edge against the surface of the dryer. A blade angle changer is operatively connected to the swing arm for pivoting the swing arm relative to the support, the arrangement being such that movement of the angle changer selectively changes an angle defined between the blade and the surface of the dryer. The operative edge is disposed substantially along an axis of rotation of the pivotal bearing, the arrangement is such that when the blade wears due to contact with the operative edge with the surface of the dryer, the angle is changed to optimize the creping without significantly altering the disposition of the operative edge relative to the surface of the dryer.

A quick-release post apparatus for a press comprises a pair of opposed, spaced post members with a pivoted link mounted in one post member and a pivoted swing arm mounted in the other post member. The link is movable between the opposed first and second post members. The swing arm includes a hook for engaging a rod in the link whereby the link compressively pre-loads the ends of the opposed first and second post members against a removable block, which is interposed between the opposed ends of the first and second post members. The post can thereby be quickly reconfigured between an open position permitting passage between the first and second post members when the block is removed, and a closed position when the block is in place between the post members where the post is a rigid, load-bearing member.
