A solution for handling network congestion includes detecting, by a wireless network, a network congestion condition; detecting, by the wireless network, a failed attempt, by a user equipment (UE), to initiate a data session (e.g., a voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) call) over a packet data network (PDN) through the wireless network; transmitting, by the wireless network, to the UE, a notification of network congestion; and transmitting, by the wireless network, to the UE, a retry parameter set including a maximum number of fast retries, a fast retry time interval, and a slow retry time interval. In some examples, the retry parameter set further includes a rate at which the slow retry time interval increases with a value of a slow retry counter, and/or a maximum number of slow retries. In some examples, the retry scheme varies based on the severity of the congestion and/or roaming conditions.

UE retry during network overload

A solution for handling network congestion includes: attempting, by a user equipment (UE), to initiate a data session (e.g., a voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) call) over a packet data network (PDN); receiving, by the UE, a notification of network congestion; based on at least a fast retry timer and a fast retry counter, attempting, by the UE, fast retries up to a maximum number of fast retries at a fast retry time interval; and based on at least none of the initial attempt and the fast retries initiating the data session, attempting, by the UE, slow retries at a slow retry time interval until the data session is initiated or a trigger condition halts the slow retries. In some examples, the UE receives a retry parameter set from the network including the maximum number of fast retries, the fast retry time interval, and the slow retry time interval.

The invention is directed to optimization of a seamless transition of a mobile device from a 3G eHRPD network to a 4G network in a failure scenario. The mobile device is authenticated and attached to the 3G eHRPD network. Upon the mobile device initiating a first handoff attempt to access and access the 4G network, the subscriber profile database is accessed to determine whether a packet gateway identifier is stored on the database. If the identifier is not stored on the database, the first handoff attempt of the mobile device to access the 4G network is denied. Upon being denied, the packet gateway is triggered to communicate the packet gateway identifier in an authorization request so that the identifier can be stored in the subscriber profile database. A subsequent attempt of the mobile device to handoff to the 4G network is allowed, as the packet gateway identifier is now stored on the database.

Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods for dynamically selecting a packet gateway based on LTE network loading. In a particular embodiment, a method provides receiving a request to establish a data session for a wireless communication device through a non-LTE wireless network. The method further provides determining an amount of non-LTE active data sessions on the non-LTE wireless network and determining an amount of LTE active data sessions on an LTE wireless network. The method further provides selecting a packet gateway for the data session based on the amount of non-LTE active data sessions and the amount of LTE active data sessions.
