A camless valve control system for an internal combustion engine in disclosed. The system includes a hydraulic distributor, having a rotating distributor shaft timed to the operation of the engine, the rotating distributor shaft comprising an internal flow dividing plug channeling an internal hydraulic flow to first and second portions of the rotating distributor shaft; an opening control ring oriented coaxially with the rotating distributor shaft with at least one hole configured to cyclically align with the rotating distributor shaft and provide opening hydraulic control to open a controlled valve, and a closing control ring oriented coaxially with the rotating distributor shaft with at least one hole configured to cyclically align with the rotating distributor shaft and provide closing hydraulic control to close the controlled valve.

Camless engine valve control system

Various methods and systems are provided for an exhaust gas recirculation system. In one embodiment, an engine method comprises routing exhaust gas from a first cylinder group of an engine to an exhaust gas recirculation passage coupled to both an intake passage and an exhaust passage of the engine, the first cylinder group having a first amount of positive intake and exhaust valve overlap, and routing exhaust gas from a second cylinder group of the engine only to the exhaust passage of the engine, the second cylinder group having a second, smaller amount of positive intake and exhaust valve overlap.

Method and system for matching air flow in an exhaust gas recirculation system

Systems and methods are provided for controlling exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). In one example, an engine system includes a first EGR valve coupling an exhaust manifold to an engine exhaust system, a second EGR valve coupling the exhaust manifold to an engine intake system, and a control unit. The control unit selectively adjusts a position of the first EGR valve based on a target amount, and adjusts a position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount and a position of the first EGR valve. Responsive to a first degradation condition of the first EGR valve, the control unit adjusts the position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount and based on a pressure of the first exhaust manifold, and responsive to a second degradation condition of the first EGR valve, adjusts the position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount.

Method and systems for exhaust gas control

A camless valve control system for an internal combustion engine, includes a hydraulic pump, with a rotating shaft timed to the operation of the engine and a hydraulic actuator configured to selectively open and close one of an intake valve and an exhaust valve of the engine. The hydraulic actuator includes a rotating cylindrical pump body and one or more control rings with holes channeling the flow of the hydraulic control fluid to affect the selective opening and closing of the one of the intake value and the exhaust valve. The pump body includes a cylindrical center portion configured to receive torque from the hydraulic pump and at least one channel providing a flow of hydraulic control fluid from the pump.

Camless engine design

A method of operating an internal combustion engine is provided. The method includes combusting a mixture of fresh air and fuel within multiple cylinders. The method also includes directing a first portion of exhaust gases into a first-stage turbine and a second-stage turbine of a turbocharger for expanding the exhaust gases, directing a second portion of exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold via an exhaust channel bypassing the first-stage turbine and recirculating a third portion of exhaust gases into an intake manifold after mixing with fresh air. The method includes controlling at least one of: reducing a normal engine speed at each engine power setting while maintaining constant engine power level by increasing a fuel injection per cycle; concurrently increasing a flow rate of the third portion of exhaust gas during recirculation; and advancing a fuel injection timing for reducing emission levels that meets Tier 4 requirements.

System and method of operating an internal combustion engine

A fuel injector is provided and may include an injector body and an injector valve. The injector body may define a longitudinally extending chamber and may include a first intake port, a second intake port and a fuel injection port. The injector valve may be disposed within the chamber and may include a longitudinally extending aperture in fluid communication with the longitudinally extending chamber. The injector valve may be configured to prevent fluid communication between the first intake port and the second intake port, and may be configured to prevent fluid communication between the fuel injection port and the second intake port.

Various methods and systems are provided for a combustion system of an engine. In one example, a combustion system comprises a piston crown bowl with a central apex, a combustion chamber operable at a compression ratio in a range of from about 13:1 to about 17:1, the combustion chamber formed at least partially by the piston crown bowl, and a fuel injector with a nozzle extending into a central portion of the combustion chamber that is operable to inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber, the nozzle defining a number of apertures that is in a range of from six to ten.

A system is provided for varying a duration of a closing phase of an intake valve of an engine. The system includes a tappet assembly coupled to the intake valve, where the tappet assembly includes a first tappet body and a second tappet body within a guide housing. The system also includes a cam coupled to the main shaft. The cam engages the tappet assembly to initiate the relative oscillation of the first tappet body to the second tappet body. The system also includes a hydraulic piston positioned within the guide housing and coupled to the first tappet body. The hydraulic piston selectively varies a duration of the relative oscillation of the first tappet body to the second tappet body based upon a parameter of a hydraulic fluid supplied to the hydraulic piston, to selectively vary the duration of the closing phase of the intake valve.

A method of operating an internal combustion engine having an intake, an exhaust, and a turbocharger including a turbine and a compressor, the compressor coupled to the intake and the turbine coupled to the exhaust, the engine further having an exhaust gas recirculation system coupled to the exhaust upstream of the turbine and coupled to the intake downstream of the compressor, the method including transferring heat via a heat exchanger from the exhaust gas recirculation system to downstream of the turbine.
