A machine includes a VGT and a controller. The controller monitors, based on causing the VGT to operate according to the non-dynamic control scheme, a plurality of hardware limit parameters associated with an engine of the machine. The controller determines that a hardware limit parameter, of the plurality of hardware limit parameters, satisfies a dynamic threshold for the hardware limit parameter and thereby causes the VGT to operate according to a dynamic control scheme. The controller then monitors the plurality of hardware limit parameters and thereby determines that each hardware limit parameter, of the plurality of hardware limit parameters, satisfies a non-dynamic threshold for the hardware limit parameter. The controller therefore causes the VGT to operate again according to the non-dynamic control scheme.

Variable geometry turbocharger control

An engine control module (ECM) may obtain information concerning a speed of an engine, information concerning an exhaust gas temperature, information concerning an engine airflow rate, information concerning a pressure of an intake manifold associated with the engine, and information concerning a requested amount of engine braking power. The ECM may cause one or more components of a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) to adjust based on the information concerning the speed of the engine, the information concerning the exhaust gas temperature, and the information concerning the engine airflow rate. Additionally, or alternatively, the ECM may cause the one or more components of the VGT to adjust based on the information concerning the pressure of the intake manifold associated with the engine and the information concerning the requested amount of engine braking power.

Using a variable geometry turbocharger to control an exhaust gas temperature and a pressure of an intake manifold

An engine braking system includes engine braking actuators for adjusting exhaust valve timings to engine braking timings in a cylinder-number braking mode. The system further includes an engine braking controller coupled to a control switch that produces a request indicating a requested cylinder-number braking mode. The engine braking controller is structured to transition exhaust valves to the engine braking timings, determine a control term to adjust intake air pressure for varying a braking power of the engine, and to adjust geometry of an exhaust turbine based on the control term. An adjusted speed of a compressor rotated by the exhaust turbine provides a change to intake air pressure that adjusts the braking power of the engine. Different levels of braking power are provided within different cylinder-number braking modes.

A controller may determine that a regeneration process associated with an engine of a machine is active. The controller may obtain, based on determining that the regeneration process is active, information concerning a speed of the engine, information concerning a load of the engine, and information concerning a fuel rate of the engine. The controller may select, based on the information concerning the speed of the engine, the information concerning the load of the engine, and the information concerning the fuel rate of the engine, a control process, of a plurality of control processes, to control an intake manifold absolute pressure (IMAP) of the engine to facilitate the regeneration process. The controller may cause, according to the selected control process, adjustment of one or more components of a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) of the engine and an intake throttle valve (ITV) of the engine.

A system including a cooling fan, an actuator with an actuator temperature sensor, and a controller is disclosed. The controller may be configured to receive temperature data from the actuator temperature sensor. The temperature data may include information relating to an actuator temperature of the actuator. The controller may be configured to compare the actuator temperature with a temperature threshold associated with the actuator, and control the cooling fan to adjust the actuator temperature based on determining that the actuator temperature satisfies the temperature threshold.

Cooling control system

An exhaust system includes an exhaust pressure sensing system having sensor conduits structured to fluidly connect to an exhaust conduit in an exhaust system and feed exhaust to a differential pressure sensor. The differential pressure sensor produces a pressure signal indicative of a pressure drop across an exhaust aftertreatment element such as an exhaust filter. A plugging-mitigation conduit provides an always-open leakage path to convey condensate in a stream of leaked exhaust between the sensor conduits to prevent formation of deposits that can impact pressure sensing accuracy.

A regeneration control system for an oxidation catalyst in an internal combustion engine includes a temperature sensor to produce a temperature signal indicative of an exhaust inlet temperature that is below a regeneration temperature for accumulated hydrocarbons on the oxidation catalyst, an electrically actuated boost leakage valve, and a regeneration control unit. The regeneration control unit commands an adjustment to the position of the electrically actuated boost leakage valve to increase leaked boost to increase exhaust temperature to the regeneration temperature by way of increased air-fuel ratio. Related methodology is disclosed.

Regeneration control system for oxidation catalyst regeneration in internal combustion engine

A reductant dosing system is disclosed as having a pump, and suction, discharge, and return passages. The system may also have a return valve, an air passage, and an air valve. The system may additionally have an air passage pressure sensor, a discharge passage pressure sensor, and a controller. The controller may be configured to calculate a first average pressure inside the discharge passage while the pump is off, the air valve is open, and the return valve is closed; and calculate a second average pressure inside the discharge passage while the pump is off, the air valve is open, and the return valve is open. The controller may also be configured to determine a pressure drop inside the discharge passage based on the first and second average pressures, and to determine that priming is successful based on the pressure drop and pressures of the discharge and air passages.

A method of introducing reductant to an exhaust stream is disclosed. The method may include ordering a first dosing event, supplying a reductant to a dispensing device in response to ordering the first dosing event, dispensing reductant from the dispensing device into the exhaust stream, and forcing reductant from the dispensing device toward a reductant source, wherein sufficient reductant remains in a pumping device and a fluid passage to keep the pumping device primed.

A system for controlling boost pressure at various different altitudes of operation of a turbo charged internal combustion engine includes a wastegate valve, an actuator, and a controller. Signals delivered from an engine speed sensor, a boost pressure transducer, a barometric pressure sensor, and a turbocharger speed sensor are processed in the controller. A control signal delivered from the controller to the actuator controls the position of the wastegate valve, bypass of exhaust gasses, and the speed of the turbocharger. The controller is configured to compare the turbocharger speed to a predetermined threshold value and determine the control signal based on the comparison.

Turbocharger control system

A method for operating a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine includes varying the opening or closing of engine valves including intake or exhaust valves, in fluid communication with each of the cylinders of the engine. The method further includes generating a signal indicative of engine valve status in response to monitoring an acceleration parameter of the engine. An engine includes a computer configured to determine a performance status of intake or exhaust valves of the engine responsive to monitoring an engine acceleration parameter such as crankshaft acceleration. The computer is configured via fault detection and cylinder trimming routines to adjust valve performance based on a nominal crankshaft acceleration for the engine.

Variable valve performance detection strategy for internal combustion engine

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for determining a performance characteristic of at least one of a plurality of fuel injectors located within a fuel system. The method includes the steps of determining a first desired fuel quantity to be delivered by the plurality of injectors, suspending fuel delivery by one of the injectors, determining a second desired fuel quantity to be delivered by the injectors in response to the suspension, and determining a performance characteristic of the suspended injector in response to said first and the second desired fuel quantity.
