A process for preparing dialkyl terephalate comprising the following steps:&#x2014;i) providing furan-2,5-dicarboxylate; ii) esterifying the furan-2,5-dicarboxylate with alcohol to form furan-2,5-carboxylic acid dialkyl ester; iii) reacting the furan-2,5-carboxylic acid dialkyl ester with ethylene under Diels Alder conditions, elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of a catalyst such that dialkyl terephthalate is produced; wherein the Diels-Alder reaction is free from solvent; wherein the catalyst comprises a clay comprising metal ions and having Lewis acidity.

There is described a method of producing (&#x2212;)-levoglucosenone, said method comprising, heating lignin to a temperature in excess of 150&#xb0; C. for a time sufficient to convert a proportion of the lignin to (&#x2212;)-evoglucosenone.

A process for the preparation of 2,2,5,5-tetramethyltetrahydrofuran (TMTHF) includes contacting a TMTHF precursor with a solid catalyst, where the TMTHF precursor is 2,5-dimethylhexane-2,5-diol and/or 2,5-dimethyl-4-hexen-2-ol, and where the solid catalyst is a beta zeolite. TMTHF produced by the process may be used as a solvent.

Petroleum resins are produced using a supported BFcocatalyst complex. Preferably the cocatalyst is organic such as an alcohol or a carboxylic acid. Use of the catalyst in supported form together with the cocatalyst enables control over both Bronsted and Lewis acidity leading to better control of resin properties. The more active catalysts are useful with both pure monomer and mixed feeds.

Process for preparation of aromatic compounds

A process for the preparation of chlorinated and fluorinated benzene compounds of the general formula (1) ##STR1## in which R denotes --CN or --COOalkyl(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6), and X and Y each denote chlorine or fluorine, X and Y being not identical, by fluorodenitration, which comprises reacting a compound of the formula (2) ##STR2## in which R is defined as above, and X' and Y' each denote chlorine or nitro, X' and Y' being nor identical, with potassium fluoride in a dipolar aprotic solvent in the presence of a transfer catalyst at a temperature from about 50.degree. C. to about 250.degree. C.
