An antenna system operable to receive radio frequency signals and operable to couple radio frequency energy through a dielectric panel. The system includes an exterior radio frequency coupling module having a plate and a shield electrically coupled to the plate. The exterior coupling module also has a conductive member electrically isolated from the plate and the shield. The system also includes an interior radio frequency coupling module having a plate and a shield electrically coupled to the plate. The interior coupling module includes a conductive member electrically isolated from the outer conductor and a shield. The exterior coupling module is affixed to one side of the dielectric panel and the interior coupling module is affixed to another side of the dielectric panel in juxtaposition to the exterior module. Both conductive members of the exterior and interior module contact the dielectric panel.

Glass-mounted coupler and passive glass-mounted antenna for satellite radio applications

A dual-band antenna assembly configured to be mounted on a dielectric substrate such as an automobile window glass. The dual-band antenna assembly is adapted to transmit and receive signals in two distinct frequency bands, particularly the cellular frequency band, 800-900 MHz and the PCS frequency band 1.8 GHz. The antenna assembly is further configured to couple signals in either frequency band through the dielectric so that signals originating on a first side of the dielectric substrate may be coupled to the antenna-radiating element located on the opposite side of the dielectric substrate and signals received by the antenna on the second side of the dielectric substrate may be coupled through the dielectric to a mobile telephone located on the first side of the substrate. Thus, signals originating from a mobile telephone unit located within a vehicle may be coupled to and transmitted by an antenna element on the outside of a vehicle, and signals received by the antenna maybe coupled to the mobile telephone inside the vehicle.

Dual-band glass-mounted antenna

A dual-band glass-mounted antenna system includes a dual-band through-the-glass coupler, a matching section, and a dual-band collinear antenna element. The coupler has a portion which is secured to an interior surface of the glass, and a portion which is secured to the exterior surface of the glass at a position opposite the interior portion. Co-planer transmission line circuitry in the interior and exterior portions of the coupler cooperatively form a four-conductor transmission line operating in the &ldquo;coupled microstrip line odd mode,&rdquo; thereby achieving coupling of RF energy through the glass window material in two disparate frequency bands. The transmission line characteristics are selected to achieve efficient coupling and desired impedance characteristics in the cellular and PCS frequency bands. The dual-band antenna element includes upper and lower radiator sections separated by a phasing coil. A sleeve choke assembly positioned at an intermediate location in the upper radiator section is on the order of one quarter wavelength at PCS frequencies. At PCS frequencies, the choke virtually eliminates current flow beyond the base of the choke, effectively establishing a half-wave radiating section between the top of the phasing coil and the base of the choke. At cellular frequencies, the choke has little effect, and therefore the entire upper radiator section acts as a half-wave radiator. The phasing coil advantageously achieves broadband, &ldquo;in-phase&rdquo; radiation conditions between the upper and lower collinear radiator sections at both cellular and PCS frequencies.

A window mounted antenna system having a foot or exterior support member attached to an antenna radiator or whip and typically mounted on the outside of a window or dielectric member comprised of a plastic decorative housing, a conductive foot portion which acts as the coupling capacitor and is inserted into the cover and conductively connected to the radiating member or whip, and a fastener for attaching the whip to the foot or base portion. The conductive foot includes attachment fingers insertable into the housing and retained in place upon insertion therein, and one or more flanges for receiving a fastener passed through the end of the antenna. A coupling assembly disposed on the other side of the window includes a formed or stamped conductive element which incorporates the various conductive components which make up the coupling assembly. The conductive components are overmolded with a nonconductive support material to produce an integrated structure incorporating the various components of the coupling assembly.

Mobile communications antenna assembly

An omni-directional, collinear, vertical base station antenna having an adjustable or variable radiation beam tilt capability. Terminations at the drive or feed points are provided by an adjustable, capacitive coupling structure at the feed points between the conductive elements of a feed structure and a radiator assembly for adjusting the physical position of the feed points and thereby the phase of the feed points relative to the upper and lower portions of the antenna to alter the deflection angle of the radiation produced. A signal feed, having first and second conductive feed elements, is connectable to a signal feed line to couple a signal between the feed line and the radiator assembly. An adjustable support and control mechanism supports said elongated radiator assembly and said signal feed for relative movement therebetween to effect selective adjustment of the feed points of said capacitive coupling structure along the length of said elongated di-pole radiator assembly to thereby effect adjustment of the beam angle of the radiation pattern.

A mobile antenna system for use at frequencies in and above the 800 MHz band having a collinear radiator mounted on one surface of a dielectric such as the window of a vehicle. A coupling system is affixed to a second surface of the dielectric. The coupling system includes a counterpoise for coupling RF energy between the radiator and a transmission line connected to a suitable transceiver. Decoupling members connected to the counterpoise minimize coupling of radio frequency energy to defogger wires on the window.
