Active noise cancellation systems, components, and methods are provided with single-source forward cancellation using a direction-dependent filter response. One illustrative active sound cancelling device includes: a primary external microphone that produces a primary receive signal; a secondary external microphone that produces a secondary receive signal, the primary and secondary receive signals representing ambient audio that potentially includes sound having a predominate direction of arrival; a speaker that converts an output signal into internal audio to at least partly cancel said sound, the output signal including a forward cancellation signal; a forward filter that operates solely on the primary receive signal to produce the forward cancellation signal; and a direction finder that operates on the primary and secondary receive signals to derive an estimate of said predominate direction of arrival, the direction finder adjusting the forward filter to implement a filter response corresponding to said estimate.

An acoustic signal processing system and method. In accordance with an embodiment, the acoustic signal processing system includes an adaptive filter that filters a signal from a frequency band reservation module and generates a filter signal that is received by a subtractor. The subtractor generates an error signal that is used by a double-talk indicator module to generate a control signal that indicates the presence of double-talk.

A digital hearing aid is provided that includes front and rear microphones, a sound processor, and a speaker. Embodiments of the digital hearing aid include an occlusion subsystem, and a directional processor and headroom expander. The front microphone receives a front microphone acoustical signal and generates a front microphone analog signal. The rear microphone receives a rear microphone acoustical signal and generates a rear microphone analog signal. The front and rear microphone analog signals are converted into the digital domain, and at least the front microphone signal is coupled to the sound processor. The sound processor selectively modifies the signal characteristics and generates a processed signal. The processed signal is coupled to the speaker which converts the signal to an acoustical hearing aid output signal that is directed into the ear canal of the digital hearing aid user. The occlusion sub-system compensates for the amplification of the digital hearing aid user's own voice within the ear canal. The directional processor and headroom expander optimizes the gain applied to the acoustical signals received by the digital hearing aid and combine the amplified signals into a directionally-sensitive response.

A vent configuration for a hearing instrument comprises a vent tube having a length and a vent opening, and at least one cell positioned around the periphery of the vent tube. The at least one cell is closed at a first inner end and open at an outer end, which is adjacent the vent opening. The cell is a tube that extends around the periphery of the vent tube along a portion of the length of the vent tube. A hearing instrument incorporating the vent configuration is also included.

A remote control for programming a hearing instrument includes a housing and a mechanism associated with the housing for mechanically generating an acoustical pulse for effecting control of a hearing instrument. The remote control is passive. A hearing instrument system includes a hearing instrument having a microphone and programming, and the remote control. The programming is configured to interpret the acoustical pulse generated by the mechanism to effect control of the hearing instrument.
