A projectile with a payload protection mechanism protects, prior to and during firing, a fragile payload, where the payload must be positioned forward in the nose of the projectile, within a frangible ogive which provides little protection to rough handling, at time of downrange function. The payload protection mechanism allows the payload to move axially within the projectile, and initially slid rearward in the more robust metal body of the projectile. The payload is retained within the body by a locking and release mechanism, until the launching of the projectile triggers (by environmental forces such as setback or spin) the release of a locking and release mechanism. Unlocking the mechanism allows the payload to slide forward within the projectile into the ogive so the payload can function as required.

Payload protection and deployment mechanism

A modular constructed, standardized test device for simulating a spin stabilized projectile which is fired from a barrel having rifling grooves, comprised of the bolted together, keyed to transfer spin, modular components of replaceable rotating band, replaceable front end and back end, and filler sections for further simulation of other components. The front end has an interior recessed area which allows for a selective integration of a threaded fuze or an aerodynamic, electronic, or other structure and the rear end has a crimp groove for selective attachment of a cartridge case, and aerodynamic or other structure to mimic the rear geometry of a projectile for testing purposes.

Modular test vehicle

There is provided a mold apparatus and process whereby a warhead body can be fabricated in a single over molding process which may also include therein metal fragments, metal balls, obturators, boat tails and other aerodynamic features, metal rings and/or threads. Other molds and processes are presented whereby a warhead body may be over molded in a polymer matrix in sequential steps which may include adding therein metal balls, then fragments, and any of obturators, boat tails and other aerodynamic features, metal rings and/or threads, as desired. Still another process for fabricating a warhead body is presented whereby an insert section is first preloaded with metal fragments and covered with a skin, then the insert section is inserted into an oversized area in a mold, and polymer is then loaded around the insert section to form a unitary warhead body.

Method for sequentially fabricating a cartridge casebody through injection molding

A Dual Purpose Improved Conventional Munition (DPICM) bomblet may be converted into a gun-launched grenade. The bomblet may include a fuze, a shaped-charge liner, a casing, and explosive material disposed between the shaped-charge liner and the casing. An ogive may be attached to an open end of the bomblet. A generally cup-shaped pusher may be placed over the fuze and attached to the bomblet casing. A conventional cartridge case assembly may be fixed to a fuze end of the bomblet. When the gun-launched grenade impacts a target, the casing may shatter to form shrapnel and a shaped-charge jet may be formed.

Method of converting bomblet to gun-launched grenade

A low velocity air burst munition and launcher system allows the user to program the munition to detonate in the air at a specified range from the muzzle. The system further allows the munition to detonate upon impact or self-destruct if the target is missed. The system allows the user to program and reset the munition multiple times, and allows the user to perform this operation at night in cold weather conditions. The system requires the user to manually input the range into a fuze programming device prior to projectile launch. The fuze programming device is capable of direct interface with electronic range determining devices. The system employs electrical contacts in the chamber of the munition launcher barrel and on the projectile body to complete the circuit used for programming. Furthermore, this system is capable of integrating a magnetic induction method of programming.
