The invention relates to a suction catheter device usable with a respiratory support system which includes a catheter enveloped in a sleeve having a proximal end connector for connection to a suction source through a suction control device such as a suction control valve, and a distal end connector for attachment to a manifold of the respiratory support system. The proximal end connector includes a normally closed valve therein which prevents air flow through the catheter until a suction control device is attached thereto. The proximal end connector may also be adapted for use on a dual lumen catheter and thereby include a fluid injection passage having a one-way check valve therein. The distal end connector of the suction catheter device includes a magnifying window through which a portion of the catheter within the connector can be viewed. The catheter includes one or more markings thereon which indicate the relative position of the catheter and the connector, and which can be viewed through the magnifying window of the connector to indicate to the medical worker how far the catheter has been inserted into the patient's trachea or lungs. The invention also includes the method of assembly of the suction catheter device and the method of use thereof in conjunction with the respiratory support system.

Suction catheter connection arrangements with automatically operated

The invention relates to a respiratory support system (10) which includes a suction catheter device (41), a suction control valve (36), and a ventilator manifold (11). The ventilator (11) includes an access port (15) for attachment and detachment of the suction catheter device (41) thereto without interruption of continuous respiratory support of the patient. The access port (15) has a normally closed valve (16) therein which remains closed regardless of the pressure changes within the manifold (11). The normally closed valve (16) is positioned in the port (15) such that placement of a specially designed connector (40) of the suctioning device (41) therein forces the normally closed valve (16) to an open position, The manifold (11) and valve (16) are adapted to allow cleaning of the catheter (54) therethrough without detachment thereof.

Respiratory support system

The invention relates to a sputum trap for an aspiration a respiratory support system which includes a sleeved suction catheter device, a suction control valve, and a ventilator manifold. The sputum trap allows collection of sputum directly from a patient through a suction catheter without causing a loss of PEEP in the respiratory support system. The sleeved suction catheter device includes a sputum trap/suction control valve end connector having a valve therein which prevents air flow through the catheter until the sputum trap or suction control valve is attached thereto. The manifold includes a one-way check valve which is opened upon insertion of the manifold end connector of the sleeved suction catheter therein. The suction control valve includes an actuator which is linearly movable between a first position in which suction therethrough is prevented, to a second position in which the valve is open to suction therethrough. The manifold includes an access port for attachment and detachment of the sleeved suction catheter thereto without interruption of continuous respiratory support of the patient. The access port has a normally closed valve therein which remains closed regardless of the pressure changes within the manifold. The normally closed valve is positioned in the port such that placement of the manifold connector of the sleeved suction catheter device therein forces the normally closed valve to an open position. The sputum trap is designed for quick connect and disconnect with the sleeved suction catheter device and the suction control valve, and for simplified sealing for subsequent transport after having been used to collect a sputum sample from a patient.

A ventilator manifold and adaptors therefore are disclosed which allow attachment of respiratory system accessory devices to the ventilator manifold without loss of PEEP. The manifold includes an accessory access port which has a normally closed valve therein which remains closed regardless of the pressure changes within the manifold. The normally closed valve is positioned in the accessory access port such that placement of an adaptor therein forces the normally closed valve to an open position, and removal of the adaptor allows the normally closed valve to return to its closed position. The adaptors are formed to allow attachment of accessory devices such as an ambulatory resuscitation bag, a metered dose inhaler, and a bronchial scope. The adaptors may also include a locking ring thereon for locking the adaptor in position in the accessory access port. Further, the manifold and adaptors may also be designed to allow the injection of fluid through the accessory access port into the manifold for cleaning or lavage.

Ventilator manifold with accessory access port and adaptors therefore

An endotracheal respiration system which includes a respirator manifold with a port for attachment and detachment of an accessory device thereto without interruption of continuous respiratory support of the patient. A particular embodiment includes a suctioning system for removal of fluids from a patient's lungs during respiratory support. The manifold of the respiration system includes an accessory access port which has a normally closed valve therein which remains closed regardless of the pressure changes within the manifold. However, the normally closed valve is positioned in the port such that placement of a specially designed male adaptor located on the suctioning device forces the normally closed valve to an open position, thus allowing passage of a suction catheter through the manifold into the patient. Removal of the male adaptor of the suctioning device allows the normally closed valve to return to its closed position, thus allowing continued operation of the respirator even when no accessory device is present in the accessory device access port. The male adaptor includes a housing which is specially adapted to be securable within the valve in the access port of the manifold so as to substantially inhibit pressure loss from the manifold while simultaneously forcing the valve to an open position.

Respiratory accessory access port and adaptor therefore

An endotracheal respiration system is disclosed which includes a respirator manifold which includes a port for attachment and detachment of an accessory device thereto without interruption of continuous respiratory support of the patient. A particular embodiment of an accessory device described herein includes a suctioning system for removal of fluids from a patient's lungs during respiratory support. The male adaptor includes a housing which is specially adapted to be securable within the valve in the access port of the manifold so as to substantially inhibit pressure loss from the manifold while simultaneously forcing the valve to an open position.

Method for using a respirator accessory access port and adaptor therefore

The invention also includes the method of assembly of the suction catheter device and the method of use thereof in conjunction with the respiratory support system.

Respiratory support system and suction catheter device therefor

A relatively flexible, dual-lumen enteral feeding tube for delivery of fluid through a patient's esophagus to the patient's digestive system, the enteral feeding tube having proximal and distal ends. The tube comprises an enteral feeding lumen having a feeding lumen inlet opening adjacent the proximal end of the tube and a feeding lumen outlet opening adjacent the distal end of the tube. Additionally, a relatively small stylet lumen is provided separate from said enteral feeding lumen, the stylet lumen having a stylet lumen inlet opening adjacent the proximal end of the tube and being longitudinally co-extensive with a substantial length of the enteral feeding lumen. A relatively stiff stylet having a tapered annealed distal portion is removably positioned in the stylet lumen and extends from the stylet inlet lumen opening to adjacent to the feeding lumen outlet opening. A Y-site adaptor is fixed on the proximal end of the tube and the stylet is shorter in length than the distance from either of the Y-site openings to the tube outlet opening. To facilitate insertion or removal of the stylet, which is constructed of metal, into or from the stylet lumen, a portion of the stylet is provided with a first coating of polytetrafluorethylene having a second coating of silicone over the first coating.

An autotransfusion device usable with a chest drainage unit includes a collapsible fluid collection bag assembly having pliable fluid collection bag, a pair of stiffener members adjacent the opposed sides of the bag, and an enclosure sealingly connected to the bag securing the stiffeners in place. A fluid inlet, gas outlet, and a blood outlet are connected to the bag. A holder is dimensioned to compress the opposed edges of the bag assembly to cause the stiffeners to bow outwardly in opposite directions and expand the collection bag.
