A display apparatus () has at least one color channel providing a modulated light for each of a plurality of image frames (). One or more laser sources that provide an illumination beam having a first polarization transmission axis. An imaging modulator () in the path of the illumination beam is actuable to direct the modulated light toward a projection lens. A laser blanking apparatus in the path of the modulated light is disposed to block transient light between image frames and has at least one analyzer () having a second polarization transmission axis that is orthogonal to the first polarization transmission axis and at least one light polarization modulator that is synchronously timed to rotate polarization of transient light during an interval between frames.

Dynamic illumination control for laser projection display

A display apparatus includes one or more imaging channels, each imaging channel includes a polarized light source and a spatial light modulator that is actuable to modulate the polarized light and provide a modulated polarized light. A control logic processor is disposed to receive and analyze each frame of image data for the one or more imaging channels. A variable brightness attenuator in the path of the modulated polarized light and actuable under the control of the control logic processor to attenuate the modulated polarized light to one of a plurality of attenuation levels for the one or more imaging channels according to each frame of image data.

A method for forming, onto a linear array light modulator, a line of illumination that extends in a linear direction, the method includes forming a first linear beam array and a second linear beam array, both linear beam arrays comprising a plurality of laser beams; forming a mixed illumination by aligning the first linear beam array and the second linear beam array in the linear direction and directing the first and second linear beam arrays along a propagation path; magnifying the mixed illumination from the propagation path in the linear direction and relaying the magnified mixed illumination toward the linear array light modulator; and focusing the mixed illumination in the cross-array direction that is orthogonal to the linear direction onto the linear array light modulator.

Line illumination apparatus using laser arrays

A method for improving image contrast for a display apparatus obtains a frame of image data having one or more code values for each pixel in the frame of image data, analyzes the frame of image data to identify a distribution of dark regions therein. The method further adjusts at least one of the one or more code values for the frame of image data according to the distribution of dark regions in the frame of image data and attenuates a brightness level available for the image frame according to the distribution of dark regions in the frame of image data.

An illumination apparatus forms, onto a linear array light modulator, a line of illumination that extends in a linear direction. The illumination apparatus has a first laser array with laser emitters for forming a first linear beam array and a second laser array with laser emitters for forming a second linear beam array. An array combiner aligns at least the first and second linear beam arrays in the linear direction and directs the first and second linear beam arrays along a propagation path to form a mixed illumination. At least first and second cylindrical lens elements having power in the linear direction relay the mixed illumination from the propagation path toward the linear array light modulator. At least third and fourth cylindrical lens elements having power in the cross-array direction that is orthogonal to the linear direction focus the mixed illumination onto the linear array light modulator.

An imaging system having a programmable spectral transmission function, that includes an input image plane for passing input imaging light into the imaging system; a dispersive optical system for separating the input imaging light into its corresponding spectral components, thus creating spectrally-dispersed image components along a spectrally-dispersed direction. Also included is a spatial light modulator, having a plurality of operational states, for selecting spectral components for imaging; and having a width along the spectrally-dispersed direction; a de-dispersive optical system for re-combining the selected spectral components for imaging onto a detector array; and means for scanning the input imaging light from an object of interest to generate an output area image.

Programmable spectral imaging system

An imaging apparatus has input optics for obtaining a multispectral image bearing light and a programmable spectral switching section. The programmable spectral switching section has a first lens for directing light toward a dichroic separator that separates the multispectral image bearing light into a plurality of discrete spectral bands, each directed to an optical switch. Each optical switch is selectively enabled to redirect its corresponding spectral band back through the first lens as switched spectral band light. A light path selector element directs switched spectral band light toward an image forming section that has a sensor lens for directing switched spectral band light toward an image sensor. The image sensor forms image data according switched spectral band light from each optical switch. A control logic processor communicates with optical switches and with the sensor, providing instructions for enablement of optical switches and obtaining sensor data.

An optical sub-system has an optical element having a curved surface featured with a plurality of recurring surface tooling marks. The depth of any surface tooling mark is less than 0.2 wavelengths, whereby light is diffracted on the curved surface. A spatial filter blocks the diffracted light and passes the undiffracted light.

A scanning element () scans the modulated beam toward a display surface () for forming a two-dimensional image thereon.

A method for actuating an electromechanical grating device that has ribbon elements. The method includes the steps of: providing a data stream, generating a pulse width modulated waveform including at least two different non-zero voltages from the data stream, and applying the pulse width modulated waveform to the ribbon elements such that the ribbon elements transition through at least three different states of actuation that correspond to the pulse width modulated waveform.

Method and system for generating enhanced gray levels in an electromechanical grating display

An improved projection system that includes a conformal grating electromechanical system (GEMS) device for forming an image on a medium, and also including: a light source providing illumination; a linear array of conformal GEMS devices receiving the illumination; an obstructing element for blocking a zeroth order reflected light beam from reaching the medium; a cross-order filter placed substantially near a Fourier plane of a lens system for blocking a plurality of diffracted cross-order light beams from reaching the medium; a scanning element for moving non-obstructed diffracted light beams relative to the medium; and a controller for providing a data stream to the linear array of conformal GEMS devices.

A system and method for calibration of a display system with a linear modulator array that includes: a light source; a linear array of light modulating devices driven by a controller; a projection lens system that creates a line image of the linear array on a screen; a scanning mirror that sweeps the line image across the screen to form a two-dimensional scene; and an image sensor containing an area array of light sensitive detectors that captures image intensity data from the two-dimensional scene and transmits the image intensity data to the controller, wherein the controller converts the image intensity data into a one-dimensional array of correction factors for the linear array of light modulating devices.

A display system, including: a light source providing illumination; a linear array of electromechanical grating devices of at least two individually operable devices receiving the illumination wherein a grating period is oriented at a predetermined angle with respect to an axis of the linear array wherein the angle is large enough to separate diffracted light beams prior to a projection lens system for projecting light onto a screen; a polarization sensitive element that passes diffracted light beams according to their polarization state; a segmented waveplate for altering the polarization state of a discrete number of selected diffracted light beams wherein the segmented waveplate is located between the linear array and the polarization sensitive element, a scanning element for moving the selectively passed diffracted light beams on the screen; and a controller for providing a data stream to the individually operable devices.
