Systems and methods for providing users of wireless mobile devices with content available for purchase are disclosed. Content is loaded into a cache memory in the wireless mobile device and the user is provided with a preview of the content and the ability to purchase the content. If the user does not purchase the content, then the content is purged from the cache memory.

System and methods for pre-caching broadcast content for merchandising on a wireless mobile device

An efficient method for providing both dedicated and simulcast services over a common wireless infrastructure is described. The services can be available to a single terminal as well as to a multiplicity of terminals simultaneously. The method uses time division multiplexing and orthogonal frequency division multiple access for simulcasting information and transmitting dedicated message information from a plurality of base stations forming a cellular pattern over the same wireless frequency channel. The method comprises the steps of constructing frames for transmission by the plurality of base stations comprising control information, simulcast information and dedicated message information within predetermined time slots of the frames and allocating the simulcast information and the dedicated message information to time slots of the same frame predetermined by the control information of the frame. The underlying modulation technology used is OFDM and thereby the channel delay-dispersion is minimized.

Combined simulcasting and dedicated services in a wireless communication system

An analog telephone adapter (ATA) having a subscriber identity component in the format of a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) that couples a telephone to a cellular network via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), thereby allowing a cellular service provider to provide an alternative communication service for the home or business. Instead of using the plain old telephone service, a subscriber can plug their analog telephone into the SIM-enabled ATA (SIM-ATA) and receive telephone service from a cellular service provider, eliminating or reducing the need for a traditional Local Exchange Carrier. The SIM-ATA converts signals from analog to digital, and vice-versa. Once the analog telephone signal has been converted to digital, an IP-based protocol (e.g., VoIP) can be used to transmit the telephone call over a digital network. The cellular service provider can then track usage and bill the subscriber accordingly.

A reuse management method for a packet-switched wireless network having a plurality of links between a plurality of terminal devices and at least one base station. Each link is a wireless connection in a medium between a terminal device of the plurality of terminal devices and the one base station. A request for a link in the medium for transmitting a data packet is received. Permission to transmit the data packet over the requested link is granted based on compatibility of the requested link with other links in the medium. Granting permission to transmit the data packet includes assigning a slot for transmitting the data packet over the requested link. The packet-switched wireless network is also coupled to a plurality of connections. Each connection has an associated quality of service and the packet-switched wireless network has a virtual service rate. A data packet is received from a connection of the plurality of connections, and is placed in a quality-of-service (QoS) queue based on the quality of service associated with the connection and based on the virtual service rate of the packet-switched wireless network.

Global packet dynamic resource allocation for wireless networks

A method for transmission of digital information packets over a transmission channel. A transmitter computes a current value of a carrier-sense defer threshold and a transmit power level, based an observed ratios between recent packet transmission successes, recent packet collisions, recent packet deferrals, and an estimate of a path-loss characteristic of the transmission channel. The computed power level and carrier-sense defer threshold are selected to obtain a desired ratio of at least two of future packet success, future packet collisions, or future packet deferrals. The current carrier-sense defer threshold value is used to determine when a carrier signal for another transmitter's digital information packet is present on the transmission channel; transmission is deferred until the channel is determined to be clear of other packets. The packet is then transmitted at the computed power level.

Adaptive methods for packet transmission over wireless networks

A system is designed to allow collision to be avoided in a wireless local area network environment through the exchange (between a transmitting station and an intended receiving station) of handshake information that includes power level control signals indicative of power levels at which the sending and receiving stations are allowed to operate in order a) to avoid causing interference with communications between other stations, and b) to prevent other stations from causing interference in subsequent communications between the sending and receiving stations.
