A hemostatic composition of matter includes a coherent blend of collagen fibrils combined with starch particles as a fluffy mass with hemostatic properties better than collagen fibrils alone or starch particles alone, the composition exhibiting a level of coherence wherein the composition can be lifted, without crushing fibrils, without loss of more than 5% of 10% of a total weight of starch particles from the composition. Sheets with less than 10% by weight of additional binder are also disclosed.

Stable and robust blended hemostatic composition

An absorbent layer for moderating blood flow from a wound has a non-woven fabric layer of water-insoluble chitosan fibers having a coating of water-absorbent starch on at least one face of the fabric layer. The coating of water-absorbent starch penetrates into the fabric layer from a first surface over the chitosan fibers to a depth of at least 25% of the fabric layer of chitosan fibers. The chitosan fibers have average diameters of from 5 to 30 micrometers. The average weight of starch/chitosan may decrease from the first surface from which the starch has penetrated into the fabric to the depth of at least 50% of the fabric layer. The starch may be modified to include hydrophilic groups into or onto molecular chains of the starch.

Coherent blood coagulation structure of water-insoluble chitosan and water-dispersible starch coating

A process of making low-endotoxin chitosan or alkali-stable polysaccharide is performed by suspending bulk chitosan fibers or flakes or alkali-stable polysaccharide to form a reaction mixture in an aqueous solution of alcohol. Ammonia is the added to the reaction mixture to raise pH of the reaction mixture to above 9.5. The reactive mixture with a pH above 9.5 is heated at a temperature of at least 130&#xb0; C. for at least 20 minutes. The heated reaction mixture is cooled to less than 60&#xb0; C. and then sparged with an inert gas to remove ammonia. Separating the chitosan or alkali-stable polysaccharide from the sparged reaction mixture. The chitosan fibers or polysaccharide is rinsed with an endotoxin-free aqueous liquid to form a rinsed fiber mass. The rinsed fiber mass is further rinsed with an alcohol to remove water, and dried at a temperature below 100&#xb0; C. to form the low-endotoxin chitosan or alkali-stable polysaccharide.

Process for the removal of endotoxins to produce medical quality chitosan and other polysaccharides

Masses of particles are structurally supported by the application of vacuum through a support surface having holes thereon that are smaller than the average diameter of the particle mass that is to be supported. The reduced pressure structurally supports particles on the support surface. The mass of particles tends is so well supported that it tends retain its shape unless additional forces are applied. The system comprises the vacuum applicator (e.g., pump), a vacuum carrying system and the support surface. When a mass of particles is supported on the support surface under vacuum, the particles can be carried to a target surface, the mass of particles pressed against the target surface, the mass conforming to the target surface, and the vacuum reduced or stopped, depositing the particle mass onto the surface in excellent shape compliance with that surface.

Method of supporting and/or applying particulate materials

A delivery system for the delivery of flowable medicinal, therapeutic or medicine materials has a strip with flowable material contained and restrained therein. A removable seal is provided, so that when the removable seal is removed, the flowable material will flow from a storage area onto a site selected for treatment. The removable seal may be provided with additional features such as absorbent coatings, or additional disinfectants coatings useful in preparing the wound surface to receive the flowable wound treatment material. A preferred composition is a system, article and method for the enhancement of clotting in wounds with extravascular blood flow, especially where the surface of the tissue has been broken.

Material delivery system

A composition, system, articles and method for the enhancement of clotting in wounds with extravascular blood flow, especially where the surface of the tissue has been broken is described. The system consists of biotolerable, porous particulates applied to the surface of a wound with liquid blood thereon. The porous nature of the particulate material, either free-flowing or packaged or restrained on or in a surface, enhances clotting. Chemical or biochemical agents, such as additional clotting agents, therapeutic agents, antibiotics, clot strengthening agents (such as fibrous structural materials), and the like may optionally be included on, with or within the porous particles. The particles may comprise such diverse materials as organics, metallics, inorganics, ceramics, and the like, both natural and artificial. It is generally preferred that the pore size distribution lies within a general range, and this range may vary from animal to animal and condition to condition, but generally falls within about 0.5 to 1000 nanometers or 3,000 to 200,000 Daltons.

Topically applied clotting material

The present disclosure relates to a method for generating a volume of chlorine dioxide based sterilant/disinfectant. The method includes the step of generating chlorine dioxide gas, and transferring the chlorine dioxide gas to a sterilization chamber. It also includes the step of monitoring the concentration of chlorine dioxide gas within the sterilization chamber, and terminating the transfer of chlorine dioxide gas to the sterilization chamber when the concentration of chlorine dioxide within the chamber reaches a predetermined level.

Method and apparatus for generating and using chlorine dioxide

A method for vaccinating an animal by implanting subcutaneously an immune stimulating biologically active material into an animal with a biologically active pellet is described. Particularly described is the method of vaccinating an animal by implanting the pellet in the ear of an animal to eliminate edible tissue damage without inducing a 'drooped ear' or 'down ear'.
