Methods and systems are provided to improve PGNAA substance analyzers. In one aspect, an analyzer includes: a source of neutrons; an opening to receive a substance; a gamma ray detector; and computational device(s) configured to receive spectral data of detected gamma rays, perform a regression algorithm on the spectral data using spectral responses for known atomic elements to determine coefficients of spectrum, sum effective weight values (corresponding to the coefficients of spectrum) together to form a total effective weight value for the substance being analyzed, divide effective weight values by the total effective weight value for the substance to generate effective weight-percent values corresponding to two or more respective ones of the atomic elements detected in the spectral data, and generate final weight-percent values based on a correlation of previous effective weight-percent values obtained for known samples with elemental or molecular weight-percent values obtained for the known samples.

Weight-percent analysis for prompt gamma neutron activation substance analyzers

Methods and systems are provided to improve prompt gamma neutron activation substance analyzers. In one aspect, a detector unit for prompt gamma neutron activation analysis includes: a scintillator configured to fluoresce when impacted by gamma rays generated by absorption of neutrons by a substance to be analyzed; a photosensor configured to receive fluorescence from the scintillator; electronics coupled with the photosensor, the electronics configured to receive and process analog signals from the photosensor and output digital detection signals for the substance; and a housing containing the scintillator, the photosensor, and the electronics; wherein the housing includes interfaces configured to receive cables capable of providing power, temperature control, and digital communication signals.

Prompt gamma neutron activation substance analyzers

Methods and systems are provided to improve prompt gamma neutron activation substance analyzers. In one aspect, a substance analyzer unit includes: a source of neutrons; an opening arranged with respect to the source of neutrons to receive a substance; and a detector housing having (i) a detector configured and arranged to receive gamma rays generated by absorption of neutrons by the substance, and (ii) electronics coupled with the detector within the detector housing, wherein the electronics are configured to receive and process analog signals from the detector and output digital detection signals.

A substance analyzer utilizing Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis for identifying characteristics of a substance and method of manufacturing the same are disclosed. The analyzer is small enough to be portable and to allow its use in many applications where current analyzers cannot be utilized. The analyzer uses a neutron radiation source and a gamma-ray detector to activate the sample material and detect the prompt gamma rays emitted by the sample material. A novel housing for such an analyzer and method for making the housing are also described. Novel methods of operating such an analyzer including via a communications network are also disclosed. Also disclosed are data analysis methods that improve the accuracy and sensitivity of the results of such material analysis.

Method and apparatus for analysis of elements in bulk substance

A calibration block is used for calibrating a bulk material analyzer that has an activation region in which bulk material is received for analysis and a chute for passing the bulk material through the activation region. The block is dimensioned to be of almost the same cross-sectional size as the interior of the chute and extends both above and below the activation region when inserted in the chute. The calibration block is manufactured by (a) providing a mixture of known materials of known proportions that do not chemically react with each other, including a bonding agent; (b) homogenizing the mixture to make a thick paste in which the known materials are bound without segregation of known materials that have different densities; (c) molding the homogeneous mixture into the shape of a block having predetermined dimensions; and (d) solidifying the molded mixture to provide the calibration block. Alternative processes for manufacturing the calibration block utilize compaction and sintering techniques instead of a bonding agent. The measurement system of the bulk material analyzer is calibrated in accordance with measurements made while the calibration block is in the chute. One embodiment of the calibration block includes a plurality of uniformly distributed holes extending through the block for receiving insertions of a known quantity of a unique known material.

Bulk material analyzer calibration block

A complete PGNAA bulk material analyzer is self contained in a sealed and air conditioned housing. Bulk material is channeled by an open-ended vertical chute having a one-foot-by-three-foot cross-sectional dimension through an activation region between three neutron sources and two gamma ray detectors. The sources are symmetrically disposed on one of the three-foot long sides of the chute from one end of such side to the other. The detectors are symmetrically disposed on the opposite side of the chute between positions opposing the positions of the sources on the one side of the chute. The chute is dimensioned to enable free flow of various bulk materials. It handles coal of up to a top size of four inches and with typical surface moisture contents and agglomeration characteristics. The relative disposition of the sources and detectors results in the measurements being independent of the lateral distribution of the bulk material within the chute. The signals produced by the detectors are continuously processed by signal processing equipment sealed within a separate compartment in the container to provide periodic measurements of the elemental content of the bulk material channeled through the activation region. A measurement of the bulk material channeled through the activation region during each periodic measurement interval is processed over several measurement intervals with the periodic elemental content measurements to provide weighted average measurements of the elemental content of bulk material over time periods representing average lots of the bulk material.

Self-contained, on-line, real-time bulk material analyzer

A fission chamber detector system for monitoring neutron flux density in a nuclear reactor includes a preamplifier and signal conditioning unit for amplifying and conditioning neutron signal pulses produced by fission chamber detectors located adjacent the reactor core. The preamplifier and signal conditioning unit are located outside of the containment vessel for the reactor. The amplifier and signal conditioning unit amplify and condition the neutron signal pulses to provide signals that can be transmitted by twisted shielded pairs to a remotely located signal processing unit. The preamplifiers include an input stage that enables the preamplifiers to be controlled remotely to either pass or inhibit neutron signal pulses to an amplifier stage from the fission chambers, and to pass test signals to the amplifier stage.

Fission chamber detector system for monitoring neutron flux in a nuclear

A fission chamber detector system for monitoring neutron flux density in a nuclear reactor utilizes a unique coaxial cable carried through a flexible metal hose to provide sufficient signal quality to allow a preamplifier and signal conditioning unit for amplifying and conditioning neutron signal pulses produced by the fission chambers to be far enough away from the fission chambers as to be located outside of the containment vessel for the reactor. Reactor power and rate-of-reactor-power-change signals produced for overlapping power ranges from a countrate circuit and a mean square voltage circuit are aligned by a voltage controlled switch and a slave switch without causing spurious transients in the rate-of-change signals. Power signal indications are provided over 12 decades. The preamplifiers include an input stage that enables the preamplifiers to be controlled remotely to either pass or inhibit neutron signal pulses to an amplifier stage from the fission chambers, and to pass test signals to the amplifier stage.

A log forming apparatus includes a slotted die chamber, a rotary feed auger for advancing loose particles into the die chamber, and a replaceable tip having a pressure face for engaging successive layers of particles from the auger and pressing these layers together into the shape of a log. The pressure face comprises a plurality of semi-circular grooves for forming ridges in each layer of particles which are pressed within corresponding grooves of a preceding layer during compaction. A mandrel extends axially forwardly of the pressure face and forms an axial bore through the log to facilitate the removal of heat and steam therefrom. The mandrel is hollow to direct a flow of compressed air through the bore to further facilitate such removal. The auger comprises an interrupted helical screw thread for providing a sensitive advancement of loose particles forwardly along a helical feed channel defined by the screw thread. The feed channel includes a forward discharge scoop of substantially constant volume. A clamp enables the slotted die chamber to be compressed to increase the backpressure applied to the log. A cooling/drying section comprises pressurized walls forming a log-conducting trough. An adjustment mechanism enables the pressure between the walls to be varied so as to alter the magnitude of the lateral forces which are applied to the log.
