Methods and apparatuses for acoustic waveguides are disclosed. In one example, a method for constructing an acoustic waveguide includes forming a first acoustic waveguide component having a first outer surface and a first inner surface, where the first inner surface includes a first groove and a second groove. The method includes forming a second acoustic waveguide component having a second outer surface and a second inner surface, where the second inner surface includes a third groove and a fourth groove. The first acoustic waveguide component and the second acoustic waveguide component are bonded together so that the first groove and the third groove are arranged to form a first acoustic channel and the second groove and the fourth groove are arranged to form a second acoustic channel.

The present invention provides for a microphone. The microphone includes housing, a port disposed in the housing leading to an interior chamber, and a diaphragm with a first side and a second side. The first side of the diaphragm faces the port. The microphone includes a shunt channel from the port to the second side of the diaphragm. The shunt channel receives a wind noise signal to reduce the effects of the wind noise signal on the diaphragm.

A headset storage device includes a headset cradle, a switch and a manual override device. The headset cradle has two positions: a first position when the headset cradle is supporting a headset and a second position when the headset cradle is not supporting a headset. The switch couples the audio signal to the alternate audio system when the headset cradle is in the first position and to the headset when the headset cradle is in the second position. The manual override device forces the headset cradle into one of the two positions regardless of whether the headset cradle is supporting a headset.

A system and method detects whether or not a microphone apparatus is positioned incorrectly relative to an acoustic source and of automatically compensating for such mispositioning. A position estimation circuit determines whether the microphone apparatus is mispositioned. A controller facilitates the automatic compensation of the mispositioning.

Improper microphone position and speech level on a telephone headset is sensed by comparison of a speech envelope to multiple signal threshold levels. A first threshold is used to determine whether a headset user is talking. A second threshold is used to determine whether a signal level at the microphone is sufficiently strong for proper communication. An indicator is activated when the user is talking and the signal level is too weak. Typically, a weak signal is caused by a mispositioned microphone or a user talking too softly.

A headset microphone boom that includes a hollow tubular member with a reflective interior surface. A light disperser is coupled to the hollow tubular member at one end and a light emitting device is coupled to the hollow tubular member at the other end. Light is transmitted from the light emitting device through the hollow tubular member to the light disperser. An apparatus for discriminating between signals produced by a desired acoustic source and an undesired acoustic source includes: a first microphone disposed at a first distance from the desired acoustic source; at least a second microphone disposed at a second distance from the desired acoustic source; a proximity estimation block configured to utilize signals form the first microphone and second microphone to produce a signal representing an estimate of the proximity of the desired acoustic source; and a variable gain block configured to adjust the gain of an output signal from at least one of the microphones by utilizing the estimate of the proximity of the desired acoustic source. A method of discriminating between signals produced by a desired acoustic source and an undesired acoustic source includes: utilizing signals from a first microphone and second microphone to produce an output signal representing an estimate of the proximity of the desired acoustic source; and adjusting the gain of the signal from at least one of the first and second microphones by utilizing the estimate of the proximity of the desired acoustic source.

A headset provides for user selectable switching between various frequency responses for the headset through manipulation of mechanical acoustic elements of the headset. The acoustic elements allow adjustment of the transmission paths between a transducer element in the headset and the user's ear canal, and adjustment of the resonant characteristics of the headset housing itself. Adjustment of the transmission path is made by manipulation of ports and openings in and between various volumes containing the transducer and the ear canal, and through the use of various resistant elements along such transmission paths. The user is able to independently and mechanically alter the inductance and resistance along the transmission path, and thereby independently control the high and low frequency response of the headset. Adjustment of the headset resonance is also made by manipulation of ports between interior volumes and external ports, and through variation in the size of the interior volume of the headset, thereby and increasing or decreasing the compliance of transducer. The acoustic switching may be embodied with either discrete or continuous adjustment of the acoustic elements of the headset.
