A vortex suppression device is provided which includes a plurality of spaced apart porous panels arranged generally parallel with respect to each other for placement adjacent a suction pipe inlet. The panels of the suppression device are oriented generally perpendicular to, or parallel to the suction pipe inlet. The device serves to prevent formation of a sufficiently strong vortex capable of pulling a continuous gas core into the suction piping.

Cartridge type vortex suppression device

Phenomena in water systems caused by hydraulic transients known as &ldquo;waterhammer&rdquo; are suppressed by surge vessels containing crushable, cellular, polymeric materials such as polyethylene, polyurethane and polystyrene foam. The foam may be one piece or in the form of several separate particles contained in nylon netting. A water permeable screen is located between a nozzle connection and the cellular polymeric materials for retaining the materials in the surge vessels as the water flows into and out of the vessels. The foam occupies much of the volume in the surge vessels not occupied by the water and the gas contained in the foam can not readily dissolve into the water.
