This invention pertains to an indexable and invertable cutting insert having cutting edges and a positive rake surface which appears convex when viewed in cross section.

Cutting insert

A cutting insert for the metalworking industry is disclosed having a cutting edge, a land area, a descending wall and a sloping wall that joins a planar floor in the central portion of the insert. The cutting insert is polygonal when viewed in plan and has rounded corners joining the sides of the insert. The insert has at least two angularly related cutting edges defining a plane. The perpendicular distance between the plane defined by the cutting edges and the point where the descending wall joins the sloping floor is at a minimum in the corner areas and at a maximum intermediate the adjacent corners of the insert.

A polygonal cutting insert of a hard wear resistant material is described. Located behind the cutting edge land in each corner of this insert is a bump. separating the bump from the cutting edge land is a lower secondary land. This secondary land has its maximum height and width in the corner areas of the insert. Its height and width gradually decrease as it extends away from the corner area in a direction parallel to the cutting edge.

This invention relates to an indexable broadnosing cutting insert for use in boring and broadnosing applications, especially where a floating type of boring head is required. This insert, preferably, has a triangular-like shape. Each side of this triangular-like shape actually being made of three angularly related faces: a forward lead clearance face, a middle clearance face and a rear relief face. The forward lead clearance face and the middle clearance face are joined to the top face of the insert by a narrow, vertical wiper face.

Indexable cutting insert

A cutting insert formed of a hard wear resistant material and having a narrow land area along the cutting edge and an inclined wall leading downwardly and inwardly from the inner edge of the land area and a planar wall extending inwardly from the lower edge of the inclined wall. The insert is free of any rising 'chip groove,' per se, and is free of any wall spaced inwardly from the cutting edge and serving as a chip breaker or chip controller.

A grooving and cut off tool is disclosed having a structure in which a relatively thin tool support blade has mounted thereon a replaceable cutting means and the tool support blade is reinforced by engagement with a reinforcing block so that the relatively thin tool support blade will not buckle when subjected to extremely rapid grooving and cut off operations.

A tool holder having an insert receiving pocket, the pocket having bottom wall and side wall means with an improved arrangement for and method of providing quick indexing or complete changing of an indexable insert. The improved arrangement comprises a pin element with a conical head on one end for engagement with a cutting insert and cooperating elements of a press-on, pry-off connection between the end of the pin and the tool holder. The insert and pin element are detachably fastened together as one unit, and when the insert is in the pocket with the pin clamped to the holder, the unit is held securely in position for cutting engagement with a workpiece.

A cutting insert of hard wear resistant material which provides a cutting edge useful over very wide ranges of metalworking conditions and effective for reducing cutting machine power requirements and providing safe and efficient chip control, simultaneously. The cutting insert has a narrow land area along the cutting edge and a wall means leading downwardly and inwardly from the inner edge of the land area and a planar surface extending inwardly from the lower edge of the wall means. The insert is free of any 'chip groove,' having a rising rearward wall, per se, and dimensions are given wherein it has been found that chip formation and breakage occur as naturally as possible with a minimum of work effort input for bending or breaking the chip. Power consumption is reduced and individual chip formations are controllable over a wider range of work conditions than heretofore possible.

A grooving and cut off tool in which a barlike holder is provided with a thin blade secured thereto at one end and projecting outwardly therefrom. The blade has a groove extending longitudinally along the upper edge thereof and a hard wear resistant insert is mounted in the groove near the forward end thereof. A clamp member is provided which is secured to the bar-like holder by a screw and which has a portion also engaging the groove in the blade-like member rearwardly of the insert and with the clamp member having a resilient tongue engaging a notch provided in the top of the insert. The clamp member has an abutment region engaging the rearward end of the insert and the clamp member is adjustable in the fore and aft direction of the blade member to compensate for change in length of the insert when it is ground off at the outer end.
