Polysuccinimide of varying molecular weight has been prepared by heat polymerization of aspartic acid in the presence of a sulfur-containing dehydrating agent employing a variety of reaction mixtures and reaction conditions. Sulfur trioxide and heat decomposable sulfur trioxide precursor dehydrating agents are preferred for this purpose. The presence of an acid scavenger within the reaction mixture is desirable and leads to a relatively higher molecular weight polysuccinimide, while the absence of an acid scavenger results in a relatively lower molecular weight polysuccinimide.

Aspartic acid precursors such as mono and diammonium maleate, maleamic acid, ammonium maleamate, ammonium malate and mixtures of these and other precursors are copolycondensed thermally with a variety of mono, di and multifunctional monomers containing amino, hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups. Improved halogen-free Yankee Dryer adhesives based on cross linked cat ionic polyaminoamide polymers are described. The adhesives are obtained by crosslinking a backbone cationic polymer formed by reacting a difunctional carboxylic acid with a polyamine containing at least one secondary amine, said crosslinking achieved by the use of a multi-functional aidehyde. The preferred adhesive is that obtained by reacting adipic acid with diethylenetriamine, at essentially equimolar ratios of from about 1.2: 1.0 to about 1.0: 1.2, and then crosslinking with a dialdehyde selected from glutaraldehyde, glyoxal, or mixtures thereof. Improved adhesion and peel strength are obtained when using the new materials as compared to materials now commercially used.

The invention provides an improved method for preparing fired ceramic oxide material. A ceramic oxide powder is dispersed in an aqueous solution containing a dispersant having as an active ingredient a dissolved salt of an anionic polymer formed from maleic acid, maleic acid anhydride, or fumaric acid. The slurry containing the dispersed ceramic oxide powder is spray-dried, compressed while substantially dry, and heated to produce a fired ceramic material.
