Disclosed herein are systems and method for adjusting bitrate among multiple media streams delivered on a common subscriber connection. One such method comprises receiving information describing a maximum bitrate provisioned on the subscriber connection, and receiving a plurality of media streams. Each media stream utilizes a corresponding bitrate, and the plurality of media streams has a combined bitrate. The method also comprises adjusting the bitrate of at least a portion of the plurality of media streams so that the combined bitrate is related to the maximum bitrate provisioned on the subscriber connection.

Systems and methods of adjusting bandwidth among multiple media streams

A network gateway function that is provided at a coaxial tap of a hybrid-fiber coaxial broadband network that feeds a customer location. A Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) modem may be embedded in the tap wherein the DOCSIS protocol is terminated. A network functionality such as firewall and network address translation is provided at a network termination point that may use Multimedia over Coax (MoCA) or other similar technology using an existing coaxial cable drop to a customer location that effectively extends a home network to the tap.

A broadband communications system uses modulation symbol transport over communications links to replace baseband or bandpass signal transport, thereby providing longer communication distances, lower communication link bandwidth, and greater signal quality. Subsequent to transporting the modulation symbols, the symbols are modulated and further transmitted over the RF transmission network.

A reconfigurable connectorization panel assembly for a circuit board housing rack or chassis, particularly suitable for use in cable television (CATV) headend equipment. Each circuit module for use in the rack has an associated rear panel assembly or 'connectorization panel' that bolts onto the rear side of a chassis which supports the rack and a backplane. The connectorization panels extend plug-action connectors through openings in the rear panel of the chassis and in the backplane, and mate with corresponding connectors on the circuit modules. On the rear side, the connectorization panels provide appropriate drop side connectors required for input/output signal cabling. The connectorization panel adapts a particular slot in the chassis for a particular type of input/out cabling and connectors. The slot can be reconfigured for a different type of circuit module by affixing a different type of connectorization panel.

A data communications protocol for single path media having low data error rate requires the generation of a data packet with a start code field having a predetermined pattern, a byte count field for defining a data field having a maximum predetermined length in bytes, a data payload field having a byte count according to the value of the byte count field and a cyclic redundancy check field of predetermined length. The value of the byte count field may be fixed, may be changed from packet to packet or may be changed upon initialization. The described data communications protocol permits utilization with data types varying from high definition television to alarm reporting applications. Moreover, the data rate may be varied by varying an idle time signal duration up to a maximum (when the idle time signal duration is reduced to zero). According to one exemplary embodiment for plastic fiber optic media, MPEG2 transport stream packets may be transmitted at 54 MBaud over distances of 20 meters or even more with other media.
