The present disclosure is directed to a computer system and techniques for automatically annotating objects in map data used for navigating an autonomous vehicle. Generally, the computer system is configured to obtain LiDAR data points for an environment around an autonomous vehicle, project the LiDAR data points onto image data, detect a target object in the image data, extract a subset of the LiDAR data points that corresponds to the detected target object, register the detected target object in map data if the extracted subset of the LiDAR data points satisfies registration criteria, and navigate the autonomous vehicle in the environment according to the map data.

The subject matter described in this specification is directed to a computer system and techniques for determining a location of an autonomous vehicle. The computer system is configured to determine the location using localization data from multiple data sources. When the localization data from the multiple data sources is unavailable or inaccurate, the computer system is configured to determine the location using predefined features of the environment.

Among other things, we describe systems and method for implementing data security in an autonomous vehicle system. The systems and methods can include inter-process communication security via key management, in which asymmetric cryptography and other validation techniques are used to validate data received from sensors. The systems and method can also include penetrative testing, in which valid sensor inputs are modified and transmitted throughout a distributed network through one or more sensors.
