An offset torque multiplier includes an input planetary gearset configured to receive an input torque. The input planetary gearset includes an input sun gear. The input sun gear is rotatable about a first axis of rotation. The offset torque multiplier includes an output planetary gearset configured to provide an output torque. The output planetary gearset includes an output sun gear. The output sun gear is rotatable about a second axis of rotation. The second axis of rotation is offset from the first axis of rotation. The offset torque multiplier includes at least one intermediate planetary gearset coupled between the input planetary gearset and the output planetary gearset. The output torque is greater than the input torque.

Manufacturing systems and methods are disclosed. In one example, an apparatus to apply a predetermine torque to a fitting having a head and a nut engageable with the head is provided. The apparatus includes a driveshaft, configured to be arranged concentrically with an axis and to be rotatable about the axis, a first socket, configured to be arranged concentrically with the axis and to receive the head, and a second socket, configured to receive the nut and to be rotatable relative to the first socket by the driveshaft.

An automated assembly machine for fabricating large mechanical structures including a floor assembly jig for receiving and holding parts in a desired orientation, a pair of carriages, a first drive mechanism for independently driving the carriages longitudinally, a second drive mechanism for moving the carriages vertically, a tool tray mounted on the carriages, and a plurality of tools, including a drill, a hole diameter measurement probe, a nut runner, and an electromagnetic riveter, mounted on the tool tray for lateral movement toward and away from a workpiece clamp-up position. The tools are positioned at the workpiece clamp-up position by moving one of the carriages longitudinally along the floor assembly jig and raising the other carriage to elevate the tool tray to a desired elevation.
