A method of operating a system including a hydrogen internal combustion engine and a supercharger between a normal operating mode and an engine braking mode. In the normal operating mode, the supercharger operates at a first rotational speed to deliver air to an intake manifold of the engine. In the engine braking mode, the supercharger operates at a second rotational speed to deliver air to the intake manifold and a restriction is provided to increase a pressure ratio across the supercharger.

Engine braking in hydrogen internal combustion engines

A rocker arm configured to perform a first event and a second event against a valve bridge assembly operably associated with first and second engine valves includes a rocker arm body configured to rotate about a rocker shaft. The rocker arm body includes a first event rocker arm assembly comprising a hydraulic capsule in a bore, and a second event rocker arm assembly. The first event rocker arm assembly is configured to selectively engage the valve bridge assembly to open the first and second engine valves.

Systems include a prime mover that generates power for a mobile vehicle; a power converter that receives a portion of the generated power, and provides configured electrical power to an aftertreatment heater device configured to selectively heat an exhaust fluid of the prime mover; at least one aftertreatment component positioned downstream of the aftertreatment heater device, and configured to treat a constituent of the exhaust fluid; and a controller including an operating conditions circuit structured to interpret an operating parameter of one of the power converter, the aftertreatment heater device, the prime mover, or the exhaust fluid; a heater management circuit that determines a heating power value in response to the operating parameter; and a heater control circuit that provides a heating command in response to the heating power value; and wherein the power converter is responsive to the heating command to heat the exhaust fluid of the prime mover.

Aftertreatment heater power electronics

When selecting cylinders of a multi-cylinder diesel engine in an engine system for cylinder deactivation (CDA), a method can comprise designating a first resonance around a first periodic frequency output of the engine system as a primary boundary and designating a second resonance around a second periodic frequency output of the engine system as a secondary boundary. Selecting cylinders can comprise selecting one of half, one third, or two thirds of the multiple cylinders for CDA while firing the remaining multiple cylinders. The selection can be made so that the periodic frequency output of the engine is between the primary and secondary boundaries. A compact periodic frequency band can be implemented to further restrict the selection of cylinders for CDA. The first periodic frequency output can be about 15 Hertz+/−1.5 Hertz and the second periodic frequency output can be between 30-40 Hertz+/−1.5 Hertz.

Diesel engine cylinder deactivation modes

In one embodiment, an exhaust valve rocker arm assembly selectively opening first and second exhaust valves is provided. The assembly includes an exhaust rocker arm and a valve bridge operably associated with the exhaust rocker arm and including a main body and a first lever rotatably coupled to the main body. The main body is configured to engage the first exhaust valve, and the first lever is configured to engage the second exhaust valve. The valve bridge further includes a second lever rotatably coupled to the main body. The second lever is configured to engage the first exhaust valve.

A transmission system selectively coupled to an engine crankshaft of an internal combustion engine arranged on a vehicle includes a transmission, an aftertreatment system, an accessory device and a controller. The aftertreatment system reduces emissions in an exhaust of the internal combustion engine. The accessory device is configured to provide power. The controller operates in an aftertreatment heat-up mode such that the aftertreatment system is heated up to an elevated temperature and emissions are thereby reduced based on the elevated temperature. The controller is configured to heat up the aftertreatment system to reach between one (1) and two (2) kilowatt hours (kWh) of enthalpy before two minutes at engine startup by (i) operating the internal combustion engine in cylinder deactivation mode (CDA); (ii) operating the internal combustion engine at an elevated idle speed; and (iii) operating the accessory device at a threshold power.

System and method to maintain hot aftertreatment at engine idle

A method of providing a rocker arm set for a valvetrain includes providing a first intake rocker arm, a second intake rocker arm and a first exhaust rocker arm. The first intake rocker arm is configured as a switching rocker arm for a first intake valve on a first cylinder. The second intake rocker arm is for a second intake valve on a second cylinder. The second rocker arm is configured to operate in a normal Otto cycle mode. The first exhaust rocker arm is provided for a first exhaust valve on the second cylinder. The first intake rocker arm operates in one of an LIVC or EIVC mode where the first intake rocker arm is configured to open or close at a different time compared to the second intake valve. The first exhaust rocker arm operates in a cylinder deactivation mode.

Valvetrain with variable valve actuation

A method of heating an aftertreatment system includes fulfilling a vehicle drive load of a vehicle via an electrical drivetrain of a vehicle hybrid powertrain, wherein the vehicle hybrid powertrain comprises the electrical drivetrain and an internal combustion engine; while the electrical drivetrain is fulfilling the vehicle drive load, operating the internal combustion engine to generate airflow for transport of heat through the aftertreatment system; and directing a heat source to raise a temperature through a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device of the aftertreatment system.

Aftertreatment heat up strategies in vehicles with hybrid powertrains

An exhaust control system for a vehicle includes a temperature sensor positioned downstream of an exhaust burner and upstream of an SCR catalyst in an exhaust system. The temperature sensor is configured to generate a measurement signal indicative a temperature of exhaust flowing through the exhaust system at an outlet of a DPF positioned downstream of the exhaust burner. An exhaust control module is configured to turn the exhaust burner on to heat the exhaust, monitor the temperature of the exhaust based on the measurement signal, subsequent to turning the exhaust burner on, turn the exhaust burner off based on an upper threshold temperature of the exhaust, and, subsequent to turning the exhaust burner off, turn the exhaust burner on based on a lower threshold temperature of the exhaust. The lower threshold temperature is less than the upper threshold temperature.

Multi-tier exhaust burner control for SCR catalyst pre-heating

A vehicle hybrid powertrain includes an internal combustion engine; an electrical drivetrain; a light-off selective catalytic reduction (LO-SCR) device coupled to receive exhaust from the internal combustion engine; and a control system that directs cylinder deactivation (CDA) of the internal combustion engine and controls heat applied to the LO-SCR device.

A rocker arm assembly selectively opening first and second engine valves. The assembly includes a rocker arm and a valve bridge operably associated with the rocker arm and including a main body and a lever rotatably coupled to the main body. The main body is configured to engage the first engine valve, and the lever is configured to engage the second engine valve.

A friction loss management system for an engine, comprises a combustion engine comprising a crankshaft and a plurality of cylinders, a reciprocating piston assembly connected to the crankshaft, a fuel injector, an intake valve, and an exhaust valve. A control unit comprises at least one set of control algorithms configured to receive engine power demand data, and determine a number of cylinders of the plurality of cylinders for deactivation based on the received engine power demand data and further based on sensed or stored friction values for the plurality of cylinders. Determining the number of cylinders of for deactivation minimizes friction between the plurality of cylinders and their respective reciprocating piston assembly by selecting a cylinder combination of active cylinders and deactivated cylinders with the lowest total friction while meeting engine power demand. All cylinders can be deactivated for purposes of coasting or controlling speed during platooning.

Friction mitigation in cylinder deactivation

A combined exhaust and engine brake rocker arm assembly configured to selectively open first and second exhaust valves, includes a rocker arm body, an exhaust rocker arm assembly formed in the rocker arm body, and an engine brake rocker arm assembly formed in the rocker arm body and configured to operate in a collapse mode and a rigid mode. The exhaust rocker arm assembly is configured to selectively engage a valve bridge to open the first and second exhaust valves, and the engine brake rocker arm assembly is configured to selectively engage the valve bridge to open only the first exhaust valve.

A method for controlling vehicle speed comprises selecting an engine speed profile for a vehicle. Road grade data is received and processed to determine a road grade for the vehicle. Vehicle speed data is received and processed to determine a vehicle speed for the vehicle. A cylinder deactivation mode for a valvetrain of a multi-cylinder engine of the vehicle is selected. The cylinder deactivation mode comprises deactivating one or more intake valve, exhaust valve, and fuel injection for one or more cylinder of the multi-cylinder engine. The selected cylinder deactivation mode provides a controlled deviation from the selected engine speed profile at the road grade and vehicle speed.
