Composite materials that are palatable to a wood-destroying pest species and also pesticidal to the pest species can be used in pest control devices and can be used as wood substitutes for structural components, which are resistant to destruction by wood-destroying pests. The composite materials include a thermoplastic polymer, a food material for the pest and a pesticide. The composite material is formed by mixing a thermoplastic polymer, wood fragments or other cellulosic materials and a quantity of pesticide, and thereafter creating a molten material within a mixer, compounder, extruder or the like. The molten material is extruded or molded to form the desired shape.

The subject invention relates in part to the oral administration of ecdysteroids for controlling subterranean termites. Preferred ecdysteroids for use according to the subject invention are ecdysone, certain ecdysone analogs, and 20-hydroxyecdysone, for example. In some preferred embodiments, one or more of these compounds is used in a termite bait in combination with one or more chitin synthesis inhibitors. Thus, the subject invention also relates in part to controlling termites by the use of a chitin synthesis inhibitor (CSI), such as hexaflumuron and/or noviflumuron, together with an ecdysteroid (and analogs thereof) or molt-accelerating compound (MAC), such as halofenozide. The subject invention also relates to mixtures comprising these two active ingredients. The MAC/ecdysteroid analog induces a preliminary molting event in termite workers (they could not complete the molting), which then allows the CSI to further disrupt the molt and cause mortality. The combination of these active ingredients, causing accelerated molting together with inhibition of chitin synthesis, is surprisingly shown herein to enhance activity against termites, as compared to either group of compounds alone.

This invention is related to the field of compositions useful in the control of pests that eat cellulose, such as, termites, where said composition is compacted and where said composition comprises alpha-cellulose, water, and a pesticide.

Pesticide compositions

The subject invention relates in part to the oral administration of ecdysteroids for controlling subterranean termites. Preferred ecdysteroids for use according to the subject invention are ecdysone, certain ecdysone analogs, and 20-hydroxyecdysone, for example. A pest control system () includes pest control devices () installed about an area or building (). These devices () each include a bait member and a communication circuit. The communication circuit may be in the form of a passive RF tag that transmits information indicative of bait status and an identifier unique to each pest control device (). A hand held interrogator () is provided to locate and communicate with the pest control devices () via the communication circuit. A data collection unit () to accumulate data gathered from the pest control devices () may alternatively or additionally be utilized. The bait member may be configured with a magnetic component to provide a magnetic signature indicative of the bait consumption behavior of targeted varieties of pest. The devices optionally include one or more environmental sensors to evaluate and predict pest behavior.

The communication circuit may be in the form of a passive RF tag that transmits information indicative of bait status and an identifier unique to each pest control device (). A hand held interrogator () is provided to locate and communicate with the pest control devices () via the communication circuit. A data collection unit () to accumulate data gathered from the pest control devices () may alternatively or additionally be utilized. The device () includes a sensor that has an electrically conductive pathway comprised of a nonmetallic material. Other pest control devices to detect varying nonzero levels of pest activity are also disclosed. Still another device includes one or more environmental sensors to further evaluate and predict pest behavior.

Sensing devices, systems, and methods particularly for pest control

A bait station comprises a base having first and second side walls connected together along a corner and extending preferably at about a 90.degree. angle to one another, and a cover secured to the side walls to form a triangular unit. A pair of mutually-facing, C-shaped projections extend into the interior chamber of the bait station from the corner between the side walls at an angle of 45.degree. to each side wall. (In one embodiment, top projections extend downwardly from the cover adjacent the base projections.) A bait material is positioned in the station between the C-shaped base projections. The bait station is advantageously positioned on a surface adjacent a wall, and insects and the like crawling along the wall are directed into the station and to the bait. The design of the bait station makes it useful with either of the side walls placed as the bottom of the unit.
