A turbocharger with integrated Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) employs an EGR pump impeller mounted on a common shaft with the turbocharger compressor and turbine. The EGR pump is housed within an EGR extension in the bearing housing adjacent the compressor housing backplate. The recirculation extension includes an exhaust gas outlet for the pumped EGR and an exhaust gas inlet is incorporated in the backplate adjacent the EGR pump impeller.

Efficient Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) for use with internal combustion engines is provided by a system including a fluidic pump, such as a Coanda effect pump. The fluidic pump has a primary air inlet receiving pressurized air from a source such as the pressure tank of a truck air brake system which operates at a pressure sufficient to provide high energy air. The pumped fluid inlet is connected to the exhaust gas manifold to receive the exhaust gas for recirculation and the outlet of the fluidic pump is connected to the inlet manifold of the engine downstream of the charge air boosting system.

A pneumatic actuator for controlling the wastegate valve of an exhaust gas driven turbocharger includes a pilot piston which is responsive to boost pressure to open only when a desired boost pressure is attained. Accordingly, premature opening of the wastegate valve is avoided because the main actuator piston is maintained at atmospheric pressure until the desired actuating pressure is attained.

A method and apparatus for providing charge air to the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine at high pressure levels at low engine speeds without compressor surge provides an auxiliary turbocharger which receives a portion of the compressed air produced by a main turbocharger at low exhaust gas flow conditions. The remainder of the compressed air generated by the turbocharger under such low exhaust gas flow conditions is communicated through the compressor section of the auxiliary turbocharger, where the pressure of the compressed air is further increased to a level sufficient to provide charge air at an adequate pressure level to the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine to permit efficient operation of the engine with minimal emissions at low engine speeds. An alternate embodiment of the invention provides a control that directs exhaust gas through the turbine of the auxiliary compressor at high engine speeds, so that the auxiliary compressor at such high engine speeds acts as a sequential compressor, further compressing the compressed air generated by the main turbocharger.
