A method and apparatus for wirelessly transmitting data to be utilized at an incident area. A server computer defines a prioritized list of data items to be transmitted to a plurality of portable electronic devices for use at the incident area. The server computer predicts a first amount of data that can be wirelessly transferred to a first electronic device before loss of reliable wireless connectivity with the first electronic device and automatically selects a first data item for transmission to the first electronic device. The server computer then transmits the first data item to the first electronic device to be shared with at least one other portable electronic device of the plurality of electronic devices upon arrival of the first electronic device at the incident area.

Methods and systems for controlled wireless distribution of data for use at a location without reliable wireless connectivity

An infrastructure device in a 3GPP compliant system performs a method transporting a plurality of media streams over a shared MBMS bearer. The 3GPP compliant system includes a RAN partitioned into a plurality MBMS services areas, wherein each MBMS service area has at least one already existing shared MBMS bearers for transporting the media streams. The infrastructure device: receives a first request to transmit a first media stream to a first communication group; identifies a shared MBMS bearer in a first 3GPP MBMS service area that is already transporting a second media stream to a second communication group; and determines whether the shared MBMS bearer has sufficient capacity to transport both the first media stream and the second media stream simultaneously. When the shared MBMS bearer has sufficient capacity, the infrastructure device simultaneously sends both the first media stream and the second media stream on the shared MBMS bearer.

Methods for tranporting a plurality of media streams over a shared MBMS bearer in a 3GPP compliant communication system

Generally speaking, pursuant to the various embodiments, pre-allocation of resources in a RAN of a communication system is performed. A system element having an application function determines, for a set of user equipment (UE), pre-allocation information used to select a set of cells in the RAN to which the set of UE will connect for exchanging data. The element sends a request to establish a bearer to an evolved packet core (EPC), wherein the request includes the pre-allocation information. The determining and sending actions are performed prior to one or more of the UE in the set of UE connecting to the set of cells. The EPC processes the request and returns a response to the system element, which identifies that a bearer for unicast and/or group communications has been established.

Method for bearer establishment in a radio access network

In a communications system having at least one service entity and a plurality of endpoints each including a logical entity and a terminal, a method facilitates a session between at least two of the endpoints in the system. The method includes: receiving a first message having information that includes a request for a session between a first endpoint that includes a non-dispatch terminal and at least one other endpoint; detecting that the first endpoint includes a non-dispatch terminal as a function of the first endpoint being unable to perform at least one function; and causing the at least one function to be performed on behalf of the first endpoint by the at least one service entity to facilitate the session between the first endpoint and the at least one other endpoint.

System and method for controlling and managing sessions between endpoints in a communications system

A method for selecting an alternate wireless communication system for a wireless communication device is disclosed. The method comprises using a first radio access technology (RAT) by a wireless communication device when scanning () for an initial wireless communication network (). The wireless communication device further registers () to the initial wireless communication network (). Then, the initial wireless communication network () determines () alternate RAT wireless communication network information for the wireless communication device and sends () the alternate RAT wireless communication network information to the wireless communication device. The wireless communication device receives the alternate RAT wireless communication network information and selects () a first alternate wireless communication network from within the alternate RAT wireless communication network information, scans for the first alternate wireless communication network using an alternate RAT and registers with the first alternate wireless communication network using the alternate RAT.

A method for providing a mobile device in a packet data network access to a channelized network is disclosed. At a gateway between the two networks, a first channelized network message that is encapsulated in a first IP data packet from the packet data network is received. The first channelized network message is retrieved and reformatted for sending over the channelized network. The gateway then receives a second channelized network message from the channelized network. An identifier of a mobile device associated with the second channelized network message is retrieved and an IP address for the identified mobile device is determined. Then, the gateway encapsulates the second channelized network message into a second IP data packet and sends the encapsulated second channelized network message to the identified mobile device in the packet data network.

The method including the steps of: generating a pool of available multicast addresses; receiving a request for a multicast address; allocating a multicast address for usage subject to at least a first limitation; monitoring the usage of the allocated multicast address; and reclaiming the allocated multicast address if as a function of the monitoring it is detected that a first condition is met, and causing the allocated multicast address to be placed into the pool of available multicast addresses.

The present invention is a system, method and network () for multicast distribution of presence information to a plurality of communication devices (). A contact list (), associated with each communication device, identifies one or more of the other communication devices. The network provides one or more multicast addresses based on the contact lists of the communication devices to the plurality of communication devices. The network also sends multicast messages identified by the one or more multicast addresses to the plurality of communication devices. Each multicast address identifies a group of multicast devices among the plurality of communication devices, and the multicast messages include presence information about the group of multicast devices. A portion of the plurality of communication devices receives the multicast messages identified by the one or more multicast addresses and extracts the presence information about the group of multicast devices from the multicast messages.

A method for controlling and managing individual directed sessions between at least two endpoints in a communications system. The method including the steps of: intercepting a first message sent from an initiating endpoint via application layer routing to at least one other endpoint requesting an individual directed session; communicating the requested individual directed session to a service entity for determining the state of the session as a function of communication system resources and capabilities and resources of the endpoints to be included in the requested session, and if the requested individual directed session is accepted determining a set of corresponding session parameters; and communicating the state of the requested individual session to the initiating endpoint via application layer routing, and if the requested session is accepted also communicating the state of the session the at least one other endpoint via application layer routing.

Apparatus and method for controlling and managing individual directed sessions in a communications system

A wireless communication system comprises a connectionless packet network coupled to a plurality of sites that are in location areas . The sites join respective location area multicast addresses to receive messages from other sites in their location area. Communication units desiring to participate in talkgroup calls need only to register affiliation with a first site of the location area. Upon the first site receiving an affiliation message, it joins a payload multicast group address to receive payload for the talkgroup. In alternative embodiments, the first site sends, via the location area multicast address, either control message(s) or tunneled payload associated with the talkgroup call to secondary site(s) of the location area. The sites initiate paging sequences to determine whether communication units at their sites desire to participate in the call and, based on the responses, the sites may deliver stored payload and/or join the payload multicast group address to receive payload for the call. In this manner, a centralized entity such as a VLR is not needed to keep track of communication units in the location area.
