An intervertebral joint prosthesis having a ball component () for engagement with a first vertebra () and a trough component () for engagement with a second vertebra () adjacent to the first vertebra is disclosed. The trough component () includes a generally concave surface () having a substantially flat portion (). When the ball component () and the trough component () are engaged to their respective vertebrae, the ball component () and the trough component () engage each other, permitting rotation and translation of the vertebrae with respect to each other. Both components include a flange () for engaging a vertebra. The invention also contemplates a method for and a tool for use in implanting a two-piece intervertebral joint prosthesis.

Artificial intervertebral joint permitting translational and rotational motion

One embodiment of a hollow spinal spacer () includes a curved anterior wall () having opposite ends (), a posterior wall () having opposite ends (), two lateral walls (), each integrally connected between the opposite ends () of the anterior () and posterior () walls to define a chamber (). The walls () include a superior face () and an inferior face (). The superior face () defines a first opening () in communication with the chamber () and includes a first vertebral engaging surface (). The inferior face () defines a second opening () in communication with the chamber () and includes a second vertebral engaging surface ().

Intervertebral spacers

Spinal spacersare provided for fusion of a motion segment. The spacers include a load bearing memberhaving a wallsized for engagement within a space between adjacent vertebrae to maintain the space and an effective amount of an osteogenic composition to stimulate osteoinduction. The osteogenic composition includes a substantially pure osteogenic factor in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. In one embodiment the load bearing member includes a bone graft impregnated in an osteogenic composition. In another embodiment, the osteogenic compositionis packed within a chamberdefined in the graft. Any suitable configuration of a bone graft is contemplated, including bone dowels, D-shaped spacers and cortical rings.

Bone grafts

A spinal spacerfor engagement between vertebrae is provided which includes a bodyformed of a bone composition. The bodyincludes a first end, an opposite secondend, a superior facedefining a superior vertebral engaging surfaceand an inferior facedefining an inferior vertebral engaging surface. At least one of the vertebral engaging surfaces defines a set of migration resistance grooves. Each of the groovesincludes a first facedefining an angle of no more than about 90 degrees relative to the engaging surfaceand a second opposing sloped face. The first and second facesdefine an arcuate pockettherebetween for trapping vertebral bone to resist migration of the spacer. In one embodiment, the groovesare arranged in series in that all of the second facesslope in the same direction.

A modular intervertebral prosthesis system includes first and second baseplates and an insert designed to mate to the baseplates. The baseplates include a mounting section and a intervertebral section extending away from the mounting section generally perpendicular thereto. The intervertebral section has at least one aperture passing therethrough. When installed, the insert is disposed between the intervertebral sections of the baseplates and faces the apertures. In this way, the insert is not insulated from the vertebral members, thereby allowing for osteoinduction, osteoconduction, and/or osteointegration, if desired. The insert may take the form of an articulating-type insert or a fusion-type insert, with the baseplates being operative with both types of inserts. After installation of the insert between the baseplates, the insert may be readily removed, at least initially.

Modular intervertebral prosthesis system

A guide and method of using the guide for positioning within a patient between vertebral members for contouring each of the members. The guide comprises a first section and a second section. A first edge is positioned along an edge of the first section, and a second edge is positioned along an edge of the second section. One or more elongated rods extend through the sections. One or both of the sections are movable along the rods to adjust a spacing between the first edge and the second edge. When positioned within the patient, the first edge is aligned along a first vertebral member and the second edge is aligned along a second vertebral manner. A manner of locking the sections is included for preventing the sections from moving relative to each other once the first and second edges are aligned within the patient.

Adjustable surgical guide and method of treating vertebral members

Spinal spacers are provided for fusion of a motion segment. The spacers include a load bearing member having a wall sized for engagement within a space between adjacent vertebrae to maintain the space and an effective amount of an osteogenic composition to stimulate osteoinduction. The osteogenic composition includes a substantially pure osteogenic factor in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. In one embodiment the load bearing member includes a bone graft impregnated in an osteogenic composition. In another embodiment, the osteogenic composition is packed within a chamber defined in the graft. Any suitable configuration of a bone graft is contemplated, including bone dowels, D-shaped spacers and cortical rings.

An intervertebral joint prosthesis having a ball component (22) for engagement with a first vertebra (26) and a trough component (24) for engagement with a second vertebra (27) adjacent to the first vertebra is disclosed. The trough component (24) includes a generally concave surface (50) having a substantially flat portion (52). When the ball component (22) and the trough component (24) are engaged to their respective vertebrae, the ball component (72) and the trough component (24) engage each other, permitting rotation and translation of the vertebrae with respect to each other. Both components include a flange (34,56) for engaging a vertebra. The invention also contemplates a method for and a tool for use in implanting a two-piece intervertebral joint prosthesis.

One embodiment of a spinal fixation system including a pair of longitudinal members 11, 12 positionable adjacent the spine, means for engaging longitudinal members to the spine 13, 14, a pair of wedge members 241 each having a bearing surface 242 configured to bear on a longitudinal member 11, 12, and a connector 200 configured to span a distance between the longitudinal members 11, 12. The connector 200 includes a pair of engaging members 205, 212 each having a fixation portion 207, 214 and a connecting portion 209, 216, and a bridge members 202 attachable to the connecting portions 209, 216. The engaging members 205, 212 each define a thru-hole 225 for receiving one of the wedge members 241. The thru-holes 225 are aligned so that when one of the wedge members 241 is advanced through the thru-hole 225, the bearing surface 242 will bear on a corresponding longitudinal member 11, 12 to force the longitudinal member 11, 12 into contact with the fixation surface 220, 221 and engage the longitudinal member 11, 12 to the connector 200. In a specific embodiment, the bridge member 200 defines a slot 203 and a fastener bore 227 having an axis D' intersecting the slot 203. In this embodiment, the second connecting portion 216 is insertable into the slot 203 to intersect the axis D' of the bone 227, whereby a fastener 230 received in the bore 227 will clamp the second connecting portion 216 to the bridge member 202.

Device for linking adjacent rods in spinal instrumentation

A spinal spacer 300 for engagement between vertebrae is provided. The spacer includes a body 301 having a first end 311, an opposite second 315 end, a superior face 335 defining a superior vertebral engaging surface 337 and an inferior face 338 defining an inferior vertebral engaging surface 340. At least one of the vertebral engaging surfaces defines a set of migration resistance grooves 350. Each of the grooves 350 includes a first face 355 defining an angle of no more than about 90 degrees relative to the engaging surface 340 and a second opposing sloped face 360. The first and second faces 355, 360 define an arcuate pocket 370 therebetween for trapping vertebral bone to resist migration of the spacer 300. In one embodiment, the grooves 350 are arranged in series in that all of the second faces 360 slope in the same direction.

According to the invention, there is provided a trial implant and method of using same. The implant includes a modular bracket defining a structure having an internal surface adapted to be seated on the distal aspect of a resected femur bone and an external surface with a shape resembling the normal distal condyle of the femur. The bracket has an opening appointed to expose a portion of the resected bone of the femur, including guide structure for guiding a tool along a predetermined path for controlled shaping of a patellar groove in the bone exposed through the opening. Removal of any portion of the bracket or guide structure is unnecessary following the shaping steps prior to performing a trial reduction.

The instrumentation includes an intramedullary alignment guide for engaging the tibia, and a rotational alignment guide for providing a guide for the insertion of a rod portion of the intramedullary alignment guide into an intramedullary bore in the tibia with the intramedullary alignment guide rotationally aligned with the intramedullary bore so that the longitudinal axis of a handle portion of the intramedullary alignment guide is angled posteriorly with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rod portion and the longitudinal axis of the intramedullary bore as the rod portion of the intramedullary alignment guide is inserted into the intramedullary bore.
