The present invention generally relates to calcium-containing structures and methods of making and using the structures. In one aspect, hollow calcium containing microstructures are used in conjunction with bone tissues/by-products to augment bone defects and extend the supply of bone tissues/by-products for bone augmentation. Bonding agents, such as calcium cements, are also used in the preparation of the hollow calcium microstructures combined with bone tissues/by-products or for use in preparing the hollow microstructures. The calcium-containing microstructures of the present invention are also useful as delivery vehicles of nitric oxide and/or nitric oxide containing or producing compounds for a variety of in vitro and in vivo uses. Calcium containing contoured substrates upon which cells/tissues can be grown in vitro for replacement and repair of tissues in vivo that conform in size and shape to the tissue surface to be replaced are also provided.

Biocompatible particles and an article incorporating a plurality of such particles is disclosed. The particles can have means for interconnecting such as an aperture for stringing the particles on a filament or interlocking external shape. A plurality of particles, with or without means for interconnecting, can be fashioned into an article by interconnecting the particles with a flexible material. When the particles have a means for interconnecting, the plurality of particles can also be interconnected by a rigid material. The particles or plurality of interconnected particles are useful for medical, dental or veterinary or biotechnical applications, such as bone, tooth or skin implants, including alveolar ridge augmentation, or as a growth substrate material. Any biocompatible material can be used, including ceramics such a hydroxylapatite.

A method for making cast precision epoxy resin bodies and an epoxy resin formulation for use therein, the epoxy resin formulation having Component A consisting essentially of from 40 to 70% by weight epoxy novolac polymer, from 30 to 50% by weight vinyl -3-cyclohexene diepoxide and from 0 to 20% by weight 3,4 epoxy cyclohexylmethyl -3,4-epoxy cyclohexane carboxylate and Component B consisting essentially of partially hydrolyzed aryl tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, preferably partially hydrolyzed pyromellitic acid dianhydride. To make the cast precision bodies such mixture is cast in a mold of the shape desired, allowed to cure to a solid body while in the mold, and thereafter heated to cause permanent expansion thereof at least sufficient to compensate for any shrinkage occurring during the casting and hardening thereof while in the mold.

Method for making cast epoxy resin bodies and epoxy formulation therefor

The invention provides a hard, strong ceramic body and a ceramic raw batch and method for manufacture whereby the body, after being formed of the raw batch in the shape and size desired, can then be fired to monolithic structure without any shrinkage or distortion during the firing operation. The raw batch contains aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, glass frit and a silicone resin, these constituents being present in a ratio such that after the firing operation the resulting monolithic body contains from about 70% to 95% by weight crystalline material and the remainder interstitial glass, the crystalline material consisting predominantly of magnesium aluminate spinel and alumina. The ceramic and method have particular utility for making dental crowns and other dental appliances where a precise fit along with high strength and wear resistance are desirable.
