A hologram exposure system that includes a holographic recording medium, a holographic prism adjacent the holographic recording medium for most efficiently diffracting light of a predetermined wavelength and at a predetermined incidence angle, a first monochromatic beam directed toward the holographic prism at the predetermined incidence angle, and a second monochromatic beam directed toward the holographic prism at an incidence angle that allows the second monochromatic beam to be transmitted by the holographic prism without any diffraction. The holographic prism diffracts the first monochromatic beam and transmits the second monochromatic beam without any diffraction to produce a diffracted first construction beam and a non-diffracted second construction beam which interfere in the holographic recording medium to form holographic fringes therein. The exposure system further includes a holographic zero order filter interposed between the holographic prism and the holographic recording material for diffracting away from the holographic recording medium a portion of the first monochromatic beam that is not diffracted by the holographic prism.

An encoded hologram that produces a first image and a second image pursuant to playback illumination, wherein the first image is resolvable by human vision while the second image is not resolvable by human vision when the playback illumination comprises non-coherent broad band illumination, and wherein the second image is machine readable when the hologram is illuminated with playback illumination that is based on the original reference beam.

A hologram copying system that includes a first reconstruction beam, a second reconstruction beam that is incoherent with respect to the first reconstruction beam, a first master hologram responsive to the first reconstruction beam for producing a first diffracted beam, a second master hologram responsive to the second reconstruction beam for producing a second diffracted beam, and a holographic recording layer responsive to the first and second reconstruction beams and the first and second diffracted beams, whereby a first hologram is formed by interference of the first reconstruction beam and the first diffracted beam, and a second hologram is formed by interference of the second reconstruction beam and the second diffracted beam.

A display hologram structure including a display hologram configured for reconstruction with a playback beam having a predetermined wavefront configuration, and a light configuring hologram that provides playback illumination for the display hologram pursuant to diffraction of an off-axis playback beam that does not have the predetermined wavefront configuration, and wherein the playback illumination provided by the light configuring hologram has the predetermined wavefront configuration.

A disk cover is provided with a reflection-type hologram assembly having multiple exposure images therein. The sun or an artificial light source illuminates the hologram assembly as it rotates as a result of the body moving. The exposure images are successively reconstructed to produce a single image that may be remotely positioned from and stationary relative to the rotating disk cover.

A head-up display for a vehicle, including a primary image reflection hologram supported by a transparent substrate located in the vehicle operator's field of view for the ambient scene in front of the vehicle, a light source for providing playback illumination to the primary image hologram, and a guard hologram in front of the primary image hologram for substantially reflecting ambient illumination that otherwise could spuriously turn on the first reflection hologram, the guard hologram having an angular bandwidth and a spectral bandwidth that are greater than the angular bandwidth and the spectral bandwidth of the primary image hologram, and having an optical density of 2.0 or greater. The guard hologram can be parallel fringe reflection hologram or a slant fringe reflection hologram.

A holographic stoplight for a vehicle including a stoplight hologram, a source of playback illumination, and a transparent prism for supporting the stoplight hologram and for guiding the playback illumination to the stoplight hologram. The prism with the stoplight hologram is mounted in front of the rear window of a vehicle with the light source beneath the surface of the rear panel that is adjacent the rear window.

A system for monitoring intensity before, during, and after holographic exposure includes a monitoring assembly within an exposure beam and intermediate a light source and a hologram recording assembly. With the monitoring assembly in the exposure beam, a monitoring beam is produced that is directed towards detection elements located outside of the exposure beam. At the same time, the monitoring assembly allows the exposure beam to pass therethrough and onto the hologram recording assembly. The monitoring assembly may include a reflection hologram with an effective shape which is different from the supporting substrate, or glass substrates with an internal reflecting surface. In either event, the exposure beam remains undistorted. The spatial arrangement among the light source, hologram recording assembly, and detection elements are such that a reflected beam from the hologram recording assembly is directed away from the detection elements to avoid incorrect intensity monitoring.

The sun or an artificial light source illuminates the hologram assembly as it rotates as a result of the vehicle moving. The exposure images are successively reconstructed to produce a single image that may be remotely positioned from and stationary relative to the rotating wheel cover.

A method of manufacturing optical elements, such as for head-up displays, from holographically recorded interference patterns in a dichromatic gelatin is disclosed. The exposed hologram pattern is developed through hydration, the hydrated hologram gelatin is dehydrated by contacting the hydrated gelatin with a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and an inert anhydrous fluid, such as a liquid fluorinated hydrocarbon solution. The dehydrated hologram pattern can then be subsequently stabilized, for example, by baking.

Method and apparatus for dehydrating dichromatic gelatin holograms

A method of developing a holographically recorded interference pattern in a dichromatic gelatin structure is provided. The process includes developing the hologram pattern by hydration and dehydration, baking the developed hologram pattern at a temperature equal or above 120.degree. C. for approximately 24 hours, rehydrating the developed hologram and dehydrating the developed hologram at a temperature of approximately 60.degree. C. for approximately 48 hours until the design wavelength response is attained to provide a stabilized hologram.
