Novel ceramic binder comprising poly(ethyloxazoline)

A method of making an inorganic slurry, forming the inorganic slurry into a useful article and method of removing the solvent medium from the formed article. The slurry contains an inorganic powder, water, dispersant, thermally gelable polymeric binder and optionally a plasticizer. The method comprises admixing the inorganic powder, water and dispersant to form a blend. The blend is a ball milled, heated, and admixed with a thermally gelable polymeric binder to form a slurry mixture, then the mixture is cooled. The slurry mixture can be extruded to form useful articles, such as metal or ceramic tapes. Additionally, the invention is also a method of final shaping and removing solvents from the formed article. A heated calendar roll stack assembly is used to rapidly remove the solvent from the article. When sintered, the resulting article is very dense and exhibits substantially no voids.

A process for preparing a thermoplastic polymer blend of two normally incompatible polymers by treating one polymer such that it contains repeating units of pendant cyclic iminoether groups and treating the other polymer such that it contains coreactive groups which are capable of reacting with the iminoether group to form linkages between the polymers. Substantially solid state thermoplastic thermal radiation suppressor composition for suppressing thermal radiation transmission comprise a thermoplastic substance (e.g., a polymer of polymerized styrene, methyl methacrylate and 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) in intimate contact with a composition (e.g., a polymer of polymerized ethylene and acrylic acid) which exhibits a refractive index essentially equal to that of said thermoplastic substance at one temperature but a refractive index different from that of said thermoplastic substance at another temperature. The thermal radiation suppressor compositions exhibit good physical properties and can be employed in the form of thermoplastic sheets or films. The compositions are useful as devices in greenhouses, skylights, etc.

Solid state thermosensitive polymer compositions

A method for preparing a polymeric laminate by the reactive coextrusion of functionalized polymers wherein at least one layer is a polymer having functional groups and the adjacent layer is a polymer having coreactive groups which form covalent bonds with the functional groups at the interfacial surfaces. One such functional group can comprise a pendant cyclic imino ether group to form covalent bonds with the coreactive groups. A laminate having a plurality of layers covalently bonded together through the interaction of pendant cyclic imino ether groups and coreactive groups is also provided.

Reactive coextrusion of functionalized polymers

A pressure-sensitive adhesive having non-ghosting characteristic comprising a latex of polymers having pendent oxazoline groups, coreactive groups and a tackifier. The latex comprises discrete polymer particles having both pendent oxazoline and coreactive groups or a blend of discrete polymer particles one portion of which has pendent oxazoline groups and the other portion of which has pendent coreactive groups. The oxazoline group is preferably 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline and the coreactive group is a carboxyl, sulfonic acid, anhydride, phenolic, hydroxyl, amide or amine group.

A stable abherent composition suitable for moldable polymer compositions comprising a polymer containing a cyclic iminoether group covalently bonded to a long chain fatty acid by a ring opening reaction of said cyclic iminoether group with the carboxyl group present on the fatty acid. A moldable polymeric composition containing the stable abherent composition and a process for preparing the stable abherent composition are also provided.

Latexes of polymers having pendant coreactive and oxazoline groups

Self-curable latex compositions contain particles of an oxazoline-modified polymer and particles of a coreactive polymer. These latex compositions are curable, yielding films and other articles having good tensile and elongation properties and excellent resistance to water and aqueous fluids. In addition, these latex compositions are self-curing at room temperature.

A latex is prepared by polymerizing (a) an addition polymerizable oxazoline (such as 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) and (b) at least one other monomer (such as a mixture of styrene and butadiene). The latexes of this invention are useful for promoting adhesion between a polymeric elastomer and a substrate, especially for promoting adhesion between tire cords and tire rubber.
